Bike Wheels are one of the most important upgrades that can be made to Road Racing Bicycles. A good Wheel sets can shave off as much as 500g of rotational Weight and may be a smarter option than upgrading Framesets which are effectively dead weight. Most off the peg Racing Bicycles come with cost effective and sturdy wheels designed to accommodate all rider weights and all road conditions. Generally these are a lot heavier than Racing wheel sets and require a lot more effort to ‘spin’ up to speed. Constant Accelerations Experienced in Road Racing Can sap a riders energy quickly the lighter wheel sets can drastically reduce the fatigue over a long race as each accelerations requires less effort with These lighter wheels. However some wheel sets trade off weight for better aerodynamic qualities Such as Deep Dish Rimmed Zipp 404 or American Classic 420 Wheel sets. 

This Deeper profile Rims Slice through the wind and can save Seconds and even minutes on Time Trials and solo breakaways during road races, these wheels can take slightly longer to spin up to speed but are much more efficient  once at full speed and require less effort and are also Faster. Road racing Wheels can cost anywhere between £200- £5000 depending on the quality of the material used and durability, The lower end of the scale up to around £1000 are usually made of Aluminium,. These are usually clincher wheels and require inner tubes, over this price most wheel sets are made carbon and are of the tubular construction which do not require inner tube and subsequently weigh less.

Carbon Tubular Wheel sets are usually reserved just for racing or other events such as Sportives as they are impractical to repair by the road side and generally require a new tyre once punctured where as clincher wheel sets are  relatively Straight forward to repair by the road side and a new inner tube can placed within the tyre. In more expensive wheel sets Ceramic Bearings are offered as standard or an optional extra, Ceramic Bearings and well constructed Hubs Can reduce Resistance and increase durability of the Wheel However these Do cost significantly more than standard Steel Bearings.
