Scott Speedster 60 2013 Product Review | Rutland Cycling

A sensational-looking road bike that’ll turn heads but at a price that seems to be a mistake by Scott’s accounts department. Technology and road performance characteristics from Scott bikes costing thousands, but in a package costing less than £500? Quick, buy one before someone realises their error!

The Scott Speedster 60. Less than £500 on the road.

Scott Speedster 60 2013 product review

Out on the road there are no surprises, other than perhaps just how well it rides for the price. Uncannily well. The Speedster 60 offers an engaging and predictable ride with little to complain about. It feels fast and capable, braking reassuringly. Light aero wheels track with precision and the Schwalbe tyres are perfectly suited for British road riding. The bike is heavier than £1000+ bikes but that's to be expected.

Beneath that moody matt black paint job is a lightweight double-butted aluminium frame benefiting from the years of costly development from Scott in professional level road bikes. This is incredible value for money when you look close, as this isn't just an entry-level alloy frame, but one that’s aerodynamically formed, just like Scott’s higher-end machines, and one that offers the same road geometry as some of Scott’s tour-winning bikes. Bear in mind this aerodynamic design comes straight down from the top-of-the-range Scott Foils and the like, and is said to reduce drag by around 20%.

The alloy forks are also bladed in design for enhanced aero qualities and look fantastic with the three colour design and prominent Scott branding.

Somehow, the possibly errant financial department at Scott, have included a full Shimano groupset on the Speedster 60, with a double chainset and a 7-speed rear cassette, fed by a quality Tourney rear mech.

Shimano Tourney rear mech

Shimano STI levers fit to Anatomic drop Syncros bars for clean shifting, while a Syncros finishing kit offers up the usual high level of comfort and appearance. And did we mention you get all of this for less than £500?!

At this price, anyone looking for their first road bike should put this at the top of their list. For the money, it really is baffling how good a bike you can start out on. That said, the level of quality in components and, in particular, that fantastic frame and fork set-up, means this would not be out of its depth as a second bike, for training in poor weather, or as a much sexier commuter option. And in the same vein, any rider astride this bike wouldn't look out of their depth wearing a number bib and a transponder either.

Quick – before Scott start investigating what’s going on in their accounts department – grab what must be the bargain of the century for anyone looking for a mean, lean road riding machine for less than £500.
