The Stumpjumer line has been one of the longest running bikes in the Specialized stable and has been one of the most influential bikes on the market – it’s often imitated but never bettered. Specialized has recently come in for some criticism from Stumpjumper fans for placing more emphasis on the development of the longer travel Enduro line and letting the beloved Stumpy fall by the wayside. The previous incarnation of the Stumpjumper FSR had benefited from advances in shock technology and followed the shift towards 1x10, but it’s frame hadn’t really kept up with modern sensibilities - a single chain ring means you can shorten the stays after all. However, breathe a sigh of relief sports fans, as today Specialized have just launched a brand new version of the Stumpjumper FSR.
Five models will be available in the UK each with a 650b and 29er representation. They are:
- S-Works Model £6500 – 29er Full FACT 11 Carbon Frame / 650b FACT 10 Carbon chassis with M5 Alloy rear triangle.
- Expert Carbon £4500 – 29er and 650b with FACT 9 Carbon chassis and M5 alloy rear triangle.
- Elite £3500 – 29er and 650b Full M5 alloy frame.
- Comp Carbon £3000 – 29er and 650b with FACT 9 Carbon chassis and M5 alloy rear triangle.
- Comp £2200 – 29er and 650b Full M5 alloy frame.
Travel for the 650b is 150mm whilst the 29ers have 135mm or 140mm depending on model.
So what’s new?
Unsurprisingly, the new Stumpy FSR features new stays - the shortest stays in it’s class apparently. 15mm has been shaved off the 650b and 18mm from the 29ers, this with a slacker head angle (67 and 67.5) has shortened the wheelbase by 11mm and 12mm. All of this means that the 2016 Stumpjumper promises to be a fantastically chuckable bike and gives the Stumpjumper line the shot in the arm that it deserves.
All frames feature a custom tuned Fox CTD with Specialized’s ‘Autosag’ function. This clever little valve helps you get pretty close to a perfect sag setting when setting up rear end travel, but doesn’t have to be used if you want to keep things as they are.
Yes. The carbon chassis bikes come with a storage compartment in the frame called SWAT. It’s a little door behind the downtube bottle cage, which can be used to store a multi tool, tubes and even a tuna sandwich. What’s more, the frames all feature internal cable routing for that clean look that any perfectionist would admire.
The specs on the bikes obviously vary, but are what you would expect from a flagship range. All feature a dropper seat post, but before you ask, there’s no XTR Di2 – sorry, if it was up to us there would be.
