Giant Bicycles was founded in 1972 by one of the world's most passionate cyclists, King Liu, who initially started the business to make bicycle frames for other companies. It was founded with the mission to create better bikes and to improve the cycling experience, values which Lui and Giant hold very close to their hearts. Liu still rides today and in 2007, at the age of 73, he cycled the length of Taiwan to share the Giant message of a healthy, environmentally friendly lifestyle. Two years later he continued to spread that message by cycling the 1,668 kilometers from Beijing to Shanghai.
It didn't take long for Liu to realise they were too good to be building bikes for other people, so in 1981 the Giant brand was born and branded bicycles first hit the market in Taiwan, soon to be followed by Europe and North America.
In 1987, Giant launched its first carbon-fibre bicycle, The Cadex 980C - a bike largely considered as the first affordable carbon road bike for the masses. Development continued, and thanks to the launch of the TCR (Total Compact Road) in 1997, co-designed with British legend Mike Burrows, Giant cemented itself at the forefront of bicycle development. The TCR was ridden by the ONCE ProTour team and was the first road bike to feature compact geometry, aerodynamic forks and a sloping toptube - Joseba Beloki went on to ride the Giant TCR to two Tour de France podiums that year.
2004 saw further ground-breaking innovation from Giant, but this time in the mountain bike market. The legendary Maestro suspension system was born and soon hit the trails, featuring four pivot points which neutralized pedaling and braking forces to allow the suspension to remain fully active on all types of terrain.
In recent years, several high-profile pro champions have ridden to victory on a Giant: Marcel Kittel, Tom Boonen, Lars van der Haar and Marianne Vos to name a few. While the bikes themselves have won numerous awards for innovation, design and rideability.
