  • About us

    Who are we?

An independent family-run chain of cycle shops established by 1981, Rutland Cycling now has 12 stores across the Midlands. Much has changed in the world of cycling since 1981, but our core values remain the same: to offer excellent customer service, stock the world's best cycling products, and inspire our local community through our passion for cycling. We are the UK's largest E-Bike retailer with 5 dedicated E-Bike Centres & also offer cycle hire, servicing, BikeFit, led rides & demo days.

We are proud to have been voted the UK's Best Independent Cycling Retailer by BikeBiz in 2013, 2011 and 2010, and nominated for BikeBiz's Best Mainstream Dealer in 2018, and equally proud to have won the inaugural Total Women's Cycling Award for Best Independent Cycling Retailer in 2014, recognizing our support for the long-underserved women's cycling market.

Rutland Cycling — past, present & future

Rutland Water Cycling began life in 1981 as a simple cycle hire cabin on the shores of newly-created Rutland Water. Founded by lifelong cycling enthusiasts Dave and Ann Archer, who built the original cabin themselves (while living with their young family in a caravan next to the building under construction!), the doors opened on a wet Easter Monday in 1981 and just three people hired bikes. But word quickly spread and by 1990, the Sunday Express had voted Rutland Cycling a "top 10 family day out."

Our first store at Whitwell, Rutland Water was soon followed by a second store on the south shore at Normanton. In 1991 we branched out further, opening a third shop at Grafham Water, near Huntingdon. More recently, we have opened a shop at Fineshade Wood in Northamptonshire (2011), and have further added to our family with the opening of our new Peterborough store (2015), the addition of five stores in Cambridge (2016), a store at Pitsford Water in Northamptonshire (2017), and the opening of our first Specialized Concept Store in Nottingham (2017). 2018 will see the opening of a new purpose-built store in Leicester. In addition to our stores, we continue to build our online presence through our website,, where you can browse and purchase our full product range for free home delivery, or click & collect nationwide.

Of course, we stock all the top bike brands, continuing to build upon the strength of our range each year, and are fortunate to be able to boast some of the largest retail cycle stores in the UK, including our flagship store at Whitwell (over 11,000 square feet) and our Giant brand store at Rutland Water (7,000 sq ft). But for us, it's about more than 'just' retail: what makes our business stand out is that powerful combination of product, location and service. Nowhere else in the UK can you see, touch and test ride such a wide range of bikes on our beautiful, peaceful, traffic-free trails, while receiving friendly, expert advice from our team, booking in for a state-of-the-art, HD video capture bike fit session, joining one of our regular free rides or seminars, or taking advantage of our unique courtesy bike scheme when you bring your bike in for a repair.

    Our community work

We love cycling! And right from the start, we have sought to share our passion for two-wheeled travel with our local communities. In the '80s, you'd have found us out and about teaching Cycling Proficiency in local schools; today, in addition to our work with schools, we also deliver community maintenance classes and 'Bike Doctor' events, beginners' road rides, Breeze women's rides, MTB night rides and regular seminars. And we enjoy offering proactive support to our local charity partners - this year, we are supporting Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall in Peterborough, not only by donating, but also by encouraging and mentoring Sue Ryder staff to undertake sponsored bike rides.
