The Details

Specialized have poured over their current road line up to create the new S-Works Recon. This delivers pavement-bred performance to the gravel and XC discipline.

Guided by more than 100,000 foot scans from our RETÜL fit data, we recognized that both a standard and a wide carbon base plate would best serve the spectrum of human foot shapes. An internal I-Beam adds stiffness and strength, eliminating the need for additional bracing. The result is an intentional fit, that's stiff, comfortable, and tunable-to put the power down. This creates a shoe that is specific to you and will maximise power delivery and performance like never before. With a redesigned tightening and boa system we have now, removed the need for a Velcro toe strap, therefore making the shoe lighter and less likely to loosen or fail when riding.

  • High-density pontoons and new shims allow riders to tune their pedal interface for maximum efficiency and a road-like pedal platform.
  • Features Body Geometry technology by way of the Varus Wedge, a Longitudinal Arch, and Metatarsal Button
  • Asymmetrical heel counter supports the medial side while removing material from the lateral side, allowing for a lower collar.
  • Using an Internal -Beam adds stiffness and strength-eliminating the need for additional bracing and allowing the shoe to stay extremely lightweight.
  • Zoned reinforcement across quarter and forefoot maximizes support while the updated BOA routing improves foot lockdown therefore eliminating the need for a toe strap.
  • Additional 3mm, 6mm, and 9mm pontoon shims for leg length discrepancy and cleat stacker available through Specialized Rider Care.
  • For a wider fit - the new base plate is 4mm wider than the standard width (8mm wider than S-Works Recon Mountain Bike Shoes).

Our Verdict

The new Specialized S-Works MTB shoe, designed to deliver as much performance as possible.

Footwear Size Guide

Purchasing a pair of cycling shoes for the first time can lead to a lot of questions. We at Rutland Cycling have over 30 years of shoe fitting experience, so here are some key pointers to look out for when buying a new pair:

1. When deciding what size cycling shoes to get, go with your normal shoe size, as cycling shoes typically run true to size. However, if you’re normally between sizes, for example sometimes you go with a 9 and sometimes a 9.5, it’s recommended that you size up.

2. The best time to measure your feet, or to try shoes on is in the afternoon, as this is when they will be at their largest due to your feet naturally tending to swell throughout the day.

3. Cycling shoes are intended to wrap snuggly around the foot as they have been designed with a specific purpose in mind—pedaling. The goal is to try and provide as much lower leg and arch stability as possible and provide you with a stable pedaling platform.

4. With the cycling industry largely originating in Europe, European sizing is the typical standard. The best way to figure out a specific brand size is use a that brand’s conversion chart. However, below is general sizing conversion chart based off conventional UK shoe sizing.
