The Details

The Specialized Torch 1.0 road shoes take design and technology inspiration from Specialized's high-end road shoes and offer the rider a lightweight, stiff and comfortable road shoe in an affordable package. First, the Torch 1.0 features Body Geometry technology which provides support for your foot and improves the comfort of the shoe - especially valuable on longer rides. The BOA L6 dial on the upper then helps to provide an even and comfortable fit across the top of your foot that you can 'dial-in' to exactly how you want it. The nylon-composite sole is rated to a 6.0 stiffness index which gives the rider excellent power transfer from foot to pedal, giving you better pedalling efficiency.

  • Body Geometry sole construction and footbeds are ergonomically designed and scientifically tested to boost power, increase efficiency, and reduce chance of injury by optimizing hip, knee, and foot alignment.
  • With a 6.0 Stiffness index, the injection-molded nylon composite sole is engineered to be moderately stiff and plenty light.
  • Lightweight Boa® L6 Fit System for on-the-fly micro-adjustment, backed by the Boa Guarantee.
  • Synthetic upper with for supple feel over the foot.
  • Reflective heel elements increase your visibility to motorists in low-light conditions.
  • Three-bolt cleat pattern fits all major road pedals.
  • Approximate weight: 290g (1/2 pair, Size 42)

Our Verdict

The Specialized Torch 1.0 features Body Geometry technology and a BOA dial for excellent comfort when you're out riding.

Specialized is able to offer trickle-down technology within its Torch 1.0 shoes with many learnings from the market-leading S-Works 7 kicks clearly present. The fit is good, at this price point, and the sole was plenty stiff enough. The heel hold isn't quite as good as I'd like, and I found that swapping in an upgrade insole allowed the shoe to really shine. Whilst I won't mark the shoes down for the lack of internal support, since no other shoes on test at this price point offer anything better, I do think most riders will get more out of these shoes if they buy them alongside a BG fit insole or similar add-on..

All in all, for £90 the reimagined Torch 1.0 is a good option if you like SPD-SLs and want the more-pro adjustability and look/feel of a Boa closure, especially if you're not too wide of foot..

They have lost their three-Velcro-strap closure system and said goodbye to their commuter-friendly two-point cleat fitting. At the same time, they’ve gained a Boa L6 dial and cord for micro-adjustments and shed about a claimed 50g a pair..

Footwear Size Guide

Purchasing a pair of cycling shoes for the first time can lead to a lot of questions. We at Rutland Cycling have over 30 years of shoe fitting experience, so here are some key pointers to look out for when buying a new pair:

1. When deciding what size cycling shoes to get, go with your normal shoe size, as cycling shoes typically run true to size. However, if you’re normally between sizes, for example sometimes you go with a 9 and sometimes a 9.5, it’s recommended that you size up.

2. The best time to measure your feet, or to try shoes on is in the afternoon, as this is when they will be at their largest due to your feet naturally tending to swell throughout the day.

3. Cycling shoes are intended to wrap snuggly around the foot as they have been designed with a specific purpose in mind—pedaling. The goal is to try and provide as much lower leg and arch stability as possible and provide you with a stable pedaling platform.

4. With the cycling industry largely originating in Europe, European sizing is the typical standard. The best way to figure out a specific brand size is use a that brand’s conversion chart. However, below is general sizing conversion chart based off conventional UK shoe sizing.
