2020 Specialized Turbo Creo SL Range Guide

   Words by David Hicks

   on 15/07/2019 17:24:03

Words by Tom Worsfold

The Turbo Creo SL marks Specialized’s first foray into the world of electric road bikes, evolving their current Turbo E-bike technology into something all-together new and exciting. Featuring a brand-new Specialized SL 1.1 motor, the Turbo Creo brings with it an incredibly natural yet powerful feel, making steeps and headwinds a worry of the past. Want to go twice as far and have twice as much fun? Read on below to find out which Turbo Creo SL model is for you.

"We’re going to flatten your climbs. We’re going to make you laugh at headwinds, ride farther, and go faster than you ever imagined. That’s what our first Turbo road bike is all about. Because, let’s be honest, riding faster is just more fun. Turbo Creo SL – It`s you, only faster."

Discipline: E-road/Gravel (Evo)

Usage: Sportive/endurance/gravel (Evo)

Models: Three models including gravel-spec Evo option

  • - Up to 130km of range off the internal battery alone
  • - Industry leading weights, as low as 12.1kg
  • - Optional Range Extender for 65km of additional range
  • - Drag-free motor, rides just like a normal road bike
  • - Gravel orientated Evo build option available

Who Is It For?

The Specialized Turbo Creo SL is designed for the rider who is always seeking more, someone who appreciates the benefits that come alongside a Turbo bike and is looking to ride further, faster and with more ease. The Creo SL is a performance bike at heart, with natural handing and agility that overall feels instinctive and familiar. Specialized's key aim was to keep the Creo SL feeling like a high spec bike, one that you would always be excited to get out the garage and onto the roads, and they certainly have not disappointed!

The Frame

Specialized launched the Turbo range way back in 2012 and in the time since then it is safe to say they have mastered the art of motor & battery integration. The Turbo line-up is sleek and stealthy, causing no doubt many double-takes when seen in the wild, and the Turbo Creo SL is no different. The frame itself offers great versatility, with the road and gravel specific versions being built up on the exact same frame. This is great news for those who are on the fence between models or like the idea of both the regular and Evo models, allowing you to have the best of both worlds by just swapping out your wheelset.

The frames geometry is shared with that of the Specialized Diverge, the only differences being a longer chainstay length (due to accommodating for the motor) and slightly slacker head angle. This gives the Creo SL a stable and confidence inspiring feel when pointed downhill, a ride character further reinforced by the low centre of gravity created by the crank mounted motor. The Creo will leave you pushing faster than ever, whether uphill or down, inspiring confidence with every crank and speed-tuck. Making a reappearance is the Futureshock 2.0 suspension technology found on the Specialized Roubaix model, perfect for both road and gravel riding, featuring compression adjustment to suit all terrains. All carbon models in the line share the same Fact 11r carbon frame and boost hub spacing, with the difference between the Expert and S-Works model being solely the parts specification.

Motor & Battery

All three models share the same Specialized SL 1.1 motor and 320wh battery, with each model also being compatible with an optional 160wh range extender battery pack. S-Works models will ship with a range extender as part of the package, but Creo SL Expert model owners will need to purchase one separately if they wish to own one.

The internal battery will provide assistance for up to a mammoth 130km of riding (mode dependent), and can be stretched out by a further 65km with each range extender. Specialized have focussed heavily on the two keys areas of weight and battery life to create an electric bike with near zero disadvantages, with the Creo SL being a lightweight option designed to negate the feeling of “range anxiety”.

The Models - A Breakdown

Specialized 2020 S-Works Turbo Creo SL

The S-Works Turbo Creo is dripping with high-spec componentry, featuring a Shimano Dura Ace Di2 drivetrain with XTR derailleur, custom Roval CLX 50 Disc wheels and S-Works Power saddle. An 11-42t gear range backed by the SL 1.1 motor will lead you to taming hills you could only dream of, all in top spec comfort. The S-Works edition comes in at a svelte 12.3kg, with an S-Works bar & stem combo and lighter drivetrain bringing the weight noticeably below that of the Expert model. This S-Works edition comes with a range extender as part of the package, meaning straight out the box you can ride assisted for almost 200km - route and assistance level dependent of course.

Why purchase this model? It is not cheap, but if you are looking for a top-spec ride with performance to match, this is it - the best of the best.

  • Frame - FACT 11r carbon, Open Road Geometry, front/rear thru-axles,fully integrated down tube battery

Specialized 2020 Turbo Creo SL Expert

Featuring the same motor, battery and frame as the S-Works variant, the Turbo Creo SL Expert comes out swinging with Shimano Ultegra Di2 shifting, an XT rear derailleur and Roval C 38 carbon wheelset - a part spec that would make many manufacturers top models feel inadequate in comparison. While not the uber high-end specification of the S-Works model, the Expert blends performance and reliability into a workhorse package that will never leave you feeling under-biked.

Why purchase this model? A futureproof specification including electronic shifting and carbon wheels allow this model to take the edge when it comes to value for money. Looking to upgrade to an all new road experience with ride character that leave you speechless? The Expert could be the model for you.

Specialized 2020 Turbo Creo SL Expert Evo

For some, the pull of adventure is too strong – do you find yourself in your element when off the beaten track, riding where no bike has gone before? Imagine you could take your gravel rides to the next level, travelling further, faster and having even more fun. That is where the Turbo Creo SL Expert Evo finds its niche, an e-bike designed to allow you to push your boundaries beyond that of the road. The Expert Evo comes ready to explore right out the box, with wide Specialized Adventure Gear bars, 38mm Pathfinder tires and dropper seatpost. Whilst the frame, forks and wheels may be shared with that of the Creo SL Expert, the Evo comes equipped for an entirely different purpose. The wide bars and tacky Pathfinder tires provide stability when the going gets rough, and the 50mm dropper seatpost gives much needed clearance for the descents ensuring a confident ride that will take you anywhere and everywhere.

Why purchase this model? The Evo is for those who are looking to shake the shackles of the peloton for the open road, bridleway or track. A versatile, adventure-ready model capable of everything you are!
