The Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross Challenge

3 Peaks Blog

Our staff rider Lee wigginton is currently in training to participate in the renowned 3 peaks Cyclo-Cross challenge. The event takes place on the last week of September and is held on the three peaks of Yorkshire Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent.

Described by many as ‘The hardest cyclo-cross race in the world’, The 3 peaks challenge combines hard terrain, seemingly vertical gradients and the typically volatile English weather. At 61km long, It’s a real test of endurance undertaken by only the most ardent and adventurous cyclists.

Wiggy took a moment our from training to fill us in about his preparation for the race, which is intensifying as the race draws ever closer. Below is the first instalment, as training tempo begins to get cranked up a notch.

‘‘As the 3 peaks 2014 grows ever closer then my training level has seen a climb like a TDF mountain.  It is such a unique event, so the training is unlike anything I have undertaken before.  Myself and my Specialized Crux Elite spend two nights a week running up then descending the very steep hill you can see in the photographs. It takes approximately half an hour and knocks me out for a couple of days after. Training for any event is all about being specific and tailoring it as close to the event conditions as possible. Yes, where I go isn’t as high or as long as the 3 peaks but its the nearest I have. It has proven to me just how good cyclocross bikes are off road. One night I was descending and came across two guys on full suspension mountain bikes who would not ride down what I was riding down, they had the perfect bikes, but I guess if your skills cant match the terrain then it doesn't matter what bike you are riding.

So I'm training harder for less time and getting stronger, now that’s got to be a result. Next time your out riding , go to an area you can play and have fun, you will improve your skills and may even get a little stronger.’’
