The information in this blog is a few years old. For updated information for days out at Rutland water click here!

Rutland Water is truly a stunningly beautiful lake to cycle around. I should know by now, having ridden round more times than I can remember in the 30 years I've lived on the shores of such an amazing venue. Miles of waterside tracks that are traffic free for relaxed cycling, lots of refreshment stops (yummy!), fantastic scenery and endless warm and sunny Spring days!

Living in Empingham on the shores of Rutland Water and working at the bike shops, it's easy to forget how lucky you are, but this weekend I was reminded of all that makes Rutland Water one of Britain's best days out, a perfect day out for cyclists of all ages and abilities.

Happy Families

With record-breaking Spring weather we were asked by visiting Aunties, Uncles, nephews and nieces, plus grannies en masse if we could hire bikes from our cycle centre at Whitwell, as nobody wanted to be inside on such a lovely day. Also it gave me a chance to show off the new hire fleet for 2012, as we have more light weight bikes than ever before.

We were greeted with cheery smiles (they do that for everyone I'm promised!) and fortunately there were still hire bikes available to take straight away. We were offered the chance to come back after lunch, but we all worried the tea and cake would slow us down, plus we were too excited to wait any longer.

Having such a mixed family group we took things easy and the younger children were happy to ride on tagalongs behind us and you could really feel the difference when they pedalled...and of course when they didn't! We stopped at every car park for refuelling with ice-creams, cakes and plenty of water, justifying them easily through all the calories we were burning off.

Our plan had been to go out for just two hours, but we ended up hiring bikes all day and rode the whole 17 miles, which with the family we have is no mean feat. One of my nephews had only learned to ride in February and a month later rode all the way round Rutland Water, fully deserving his badge and certificate, especially as he beat me in the sprint finish! He's proudly wearing his I've Cycled Round Rutland Water badge at school all week he told us, so I think I've gained another cycling convert there!

A Timely Reminder

As I'm always reminded when we have visitors, our family are so fortunate to live near such an outstanding leisure venue as Rutland Water and it takes events like yesterday's ride to remind us of that fact. So far it's definitely working because we're out riding again after work tonight and my sister-in-law has called saying she'd had so much fun she'd like to buy a new lighter bike just like our hire bikes now!

Offroad Trails Next!

My nephews have asked for our next challenge to be a visit to our trail centre in Fineshade Wood to have a go on some of the really cool full suspension mountain bikes I was telling them about. Now the bikes are cool, but I think I'll get some practice before they arrive, or I'll be left behind on this ride too!
