Mark Sanderson asked us this common question during our Facebook Ask an Expert session (Fridays, 1-2pm):
MS: I bought a Trek 2.1 road bike a couple of years ago. It's a standard build. However, as I am building up the mileage and want to soup it up a bit, I was considering investing in a new set of wheels. Is this the right part to be looking at first and will this improve the bike?
Bike Doc: Hi Mark. Yes you're right, spending money on upgrading wheels is def' the right way of "souping up". Better wheels not only offer weight savings, they also have better quality materials and components, thus extending their lifespan. I'd suggest to spend as much as your budget allows but also consider saving part of this on upgraded tyres as these are equally important.
MS: Thanks for the information, will take this info when perusing for my new set of wheels.
