As the weather starts to turn, having the right kit can make all the difference to keeping you warm, comfortable and at peak performance. As the evenings draw shorter and the arm warmers emerge from the cupboard, being prepared for any weather eventuality can help build the motivation needed to keep your fitness up in the off-season. Long sleeve jerseys, lightweight jackets and thermal accessories can transform your rides from awful to awesome - read on below to find out our best tips for autumn road cycling clothing.

Autumn is certainly not the time for fly-weight, see-through climber's jerseys. For starters, long sleeves are almost essential (or a short sleeve jersey paired with arm warmers for balmier days). For autumn and winter riding you might find a slightly thicker fabric is more suitable. Like a standard jersey, most long sleeve jerseys will have the usual three rear pockets with possibly an additional zipped pocket. For heavier weight long sleeve jerseys you might also find storm flaps behind the zip to keep wind out.

Depending on your needs, a good cycling jacket should offer more protection than a jersey, and you'll find a range of options from waterproof capes to insulated jackets. A waterproof and windproof jacket will keep the rain off and the breeze at bay, while clever wicking materials on the inside will make sure you don't end up wetter on the inside than on the outside. And when you don't need them, they'll wrap up small for storing in your backpack or pannier. Specialist waterproof cycling jackets can come with up to three layers for wicking and warmth as well as wind proofing, and are made from the latest hi-tech fabrics, like Gore-Tex.

Versatile warmth. Handy to chuck in a back pocket, or to add an extra layer either at the start of a ride or for that lengthy Alpine descent, a gilet is a great go-to item for changeable days. Adding some extra warmth and rain protection without the bulk of a jacket, most gilets will pack up to pocket size and remain with arms reach in case the weather changes again.

As you might expect, tights are pretty much the same as bib shorts, but full length. As with the other kit we've talked about, you can choose from a range of different fabrics with lighter weight tights with a similar weight to your summer shorts, to Roubaix-lined tights which add buckets of warmth, or fabrics with a DWR Treatment. Tights can come with or without straps, depending on your preference, and some will come without a pad, if you prefer to layer up over your shorts but need some extra warmth. You might also prefer tights when the weather is a bit warmer or you're planning to work hard.

Warmers and Accessories

Besides those key pieces of kit, accessories can really make the difference when it comes to battling the weather. Layer up your summer kit with arm, knee or leg warmers - typically in warm Roubaix fabrics - and you can keep warm at the start of a ride before peeling them off and stuffing them in a pocket for the rest of the ride. Keeping your extremities warm is really important over the Autumn and Winter and a good pair of overshoes can keep your feet warm and dry, while gloves are a no brainer when the weather turns. Last but least, a traditional cap or under-helmet skull cap can keep your head warm.
