Steeped in cycling history, Castelli Cycling Clothing traces its roots back to the 19th Century to fine tailor, Vittore Gianni. However, the first Castelli cycling kit didn't come along until 1910, created for the world champion and five time Giro champion, Alfredo Binda. Fast forward 100 years and Castelli have firmly planted themselves as the go-to brand for pro-teams and everyday cyclists alike.
With autumn in full-swing and winter on the way, the Castelli Winter 2018 collection is here and ready to tackle whatever the British weather throws at us. From jackets for every condition to fleecelined bibtights, we've put together our top picks for a Castelli winter clothing guide.
The Castelli RoS (Rain or Shine) collection was crafted to suit all conditions faced when out on two wheels. Perfect for those dry and cold conditions yet with the ability to keep you as dry as possible if it should rain. When creating this winter cycling kit, Castelli wanted to steer away from the traditional baggy, wet cycling wear that had minimal breathability and create a collection that meant you could wear one outfit, rain or shine.
Castelli Alpha RoS Light Jacket
Based on the original Alpha jacket, the Alpha RoS Light Jacket builds on the already fantastic design with the added bonus of Gore's new Windstopper light rain-resistant membrane, DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment, selective seam sealing, and a water proof YKK Vislon zip. The Alpha RoS Jacket comes with a separate wind/waterproof protection layer from the inner insulating layer. This allows you to unzip the outer layer on those warmer climbs without having to completely bare your chest to the frosty winter breeze. The back of the jacket is Nano Flex Xtra Dry which is claimed to be the 'most significant nonmembrane water protection available'. The raw edge waist and cuffs lie flat against your body, moving with you to keep a tight seal so you stay warm.
Castelli Alpha ROS Light Jacket
- Windstopper 150 front and sleeves
- ProSecco Strada inner liner with 2nd front zip
- Articulated collar that fits better whether you're standing or riding
- 3 rear pockets with reflective laser-cut drain holes
- Advanced patterning makes for excellent close-to-body fit
Spettacolo RoS Glove
Next up from the RoS collection are the Spettacolo Gloves. The gloves are warm without the usual bulk, easy to pull on and off (thanks to a zip on the wrist), and mostly waterproof without trapping all the warm air in due to low breathability. The fabrics start with a water-resistant windproof outershell over Primaloft Gold insulation to increase the warmth and a soft inner liner that slides easily over a damp hand.
Castelli RoS Shoecover
The RoS Shoecover is the do-it-all shoecover; warm in dry conditions, excells in the wet, and stretchy for an ideal aero fit. The contoured seams ensure a snug fit and the high cut of the shoecovers means they come up to the base of the calf muscle for added warmth. Both the critical seams and the zip have been relocated toward the outside where they are less exposed. There is a water-resistant inner splash zone with extra engineered seams to reduce exposure to water in those areas.
Moving into the full Castelli Winter Clothing range we have jerseys, jackets and baselayers.
Perfetto Long Sleeve Jersey
The Perfetto was originally created as a long sleeve, cold weather version of the Gabba jersey. Ideal for cooler autumnal rides, paired with just a baselayer, or even for mid-winter with a warmer jacket on top. The Perfetto comes with a water-repellent finish, not compromising on either breathability or comfort, and a refined fit. The splash flap has been fully redesigned so that it lies flat to your body to protect from wheel spray and comes with a reflective logo for increased visibility. With Gore Windstopper X-Lite Plus fabric, this jersey offers full wind protection with a water-repellent finish.
Puro Long Sleeve Jersey
The third generation of the ever popular Puro Jersey, the 3 FZ is better than ever. The fabric has been revamped, making it warmer and with the addition of reflective panels on the front and back this jersey is perfect for those dark winter rides. This jersey has limited water-repellency but is still a fantastic choice to place under a waterproof shell with perhaps a baselayer for extra warmth.
Sinergia Long Sleeve Jersey
Most long sleeve jerseys have minimal use, only being suitable for those cooler rides in spring or early autumn. Castelli realised that this issue needed adressing, by creating a thermal long sleeve jersey, this garment could be used throughout the winter under a jacket or on its own when the temperature increased again. With iridescent reflective inserts on the front and above the pockets on the back, this jersey transitions from day to late afternoon rides.
Castelli Sinergia Womens Jersey
- Warmer fabric
- Lightweight YKK Vislon easy sliding zip
- 3 rear pockets
- Iridescent reflective inserts on front and back
Emergency Rain Jacket
The Emergency Rain Jacket boasts an impressive Deluge Light 2.5 layer waterproof fabric with a 10,000mm water column rating. The sleeves have innovative "gutters" above the wrists to direct water away from your hands. Easily packing away into a half jersey pocket with waterproof zips and seams, this is the ideal jacket for when the heavens open mid ride.
Started in the Team Sky focus group, the Flanders base layer is the warmest from Castelli to date. Built for the blustery conditions of Flanders in February, this range is made from SottoZero multi-denier 100% polyester fleece fabric. With extra moisture management this baselayer is fastdrying yet super soft. The neckwarmer version allows you to roll down the neck when it is warmer or pull up over your chin for extra warmth.
You can't go wrong with a great pair of bib tights or tights for this winters riding. We're going to take a closer look at technologies behind the Castelli tights.
The Sorpasso Bibtight is Castelli's best winter tight, this is down to the comfort and fit. Made with Thermoflex Core2 fabric which provides exceptional insulation for the cold and better wicking for the warmer rides. The base layer isn't particularly windproof so Castelli added the Thermoflex material over the thighs and back of the legs to retain the heat. New to this season, a lumbar support panel has been added.
Pefect for mild to cool conditions, the Chic Bibtight is made from soft, fleecy Thermoflex fabric. The articulated knee allows for greater movement and the soft-fit waistband ensures you stay comfortable throughout your ride.
The perfect addition to any autumn/winter ride, small enough to put in your back pocket when the temperature creeps up.
