Not just for commuting and running errands, the Giant Explore E+ can tackle a wealth of roads and adventures. Even Timmy Mallett has ridden one across the length of Europe and down the Camino de Santiago... yes really! Made from ALUXX Aluminium and a 60mm travel fork, the Explore E+ 2019 range is setting itself a firm contender for top spot in the electric hybrid market.

Quick Links

Frame and Forks

As previously mentioned, the Explore E+ is made from Giant's signature ALUXX SL Aluminium frame. This frame material is made from mostly 6061 alloy and gives a great strength-to-weight ration, meaning you can have complete faith in your bike whilst out adventuring to work and beyond. On the Explore E+ 2 there are RST Volant, 60mm travel forks, these forks have a mechanical lockout meaning you can adjust the travel depending on where you are riding. On the Explore E+ 1 RST Pulse AIR, 60mm travel forks with hydraulic lockout, for a smoother ride when you need it.

Groupset

There are a couple of differences between the 1 and 2 Explore E+.

  • Explore E+ 2 - 1x 9 speed Shimano Deore groupset. A good selection for the everyday user without over-complicating things.
  • Explore E+ 1 - 2x 10 speed Shimano Deore groupset. This model offers a wider gearing range for those looking for more of an adventure on two wheels

    Battery and Motor

All bikes in the range come with Giant SyncDrive Sport motors, this system is powered by Yamaha and offers three different support modes depending on you style of riding. The SyncDrive sport is ideal for riding in town and in the countryside at the weekend with a massive maximum of 80Nm of torque. Both bikes also come with PedalPlus 4-sensor technology, combining speed and torque to produce consistent power throughout the entire gear range. This gives you smooth, seamless ride, allowing you to fully enjoy being on your bike.

Both bikes come with the Giant EnergyPak 500Wh battery, giving you hours of riding time without the worry of the battery running out. Both also come with side releasing batteries, allowing for a more compact frame and easier removal of the battery pack. Where these two differ in is the display for the motor. On the Explore E+1 you have the Giant RideControl EVO, the EVO gives you a better view of your riding data and an estimate of your battery range, always useful if you are out for a long time. The EVO can also be connected via Bluetooth and offers USB charging, this means you can update the software easily. On the Explore E+ 2 there is RideControl ONE, this doesn't come with a screen but can be connected to the Giant E-Bike app to function as the display.

    Wheels

Both bikes come tubeless ready on 700c aluminium, E-Bike optimised rims, giving you great rolling ability on all terrains. The wheels come with Giant Crosscut Gravel 2 tyres, good for gripping both on and off-road.

    Brakes

The Explore E+ range comes with hydraulic disc brakes, the Explore E+ 2 comes with the lower spec Shimano BL-MT200 brakes and the Explore E+ 1 with Shimano BL-MT500 which are great value for money if you aren't looking to spend too much.

If you haven't ridden disc brakes before and you are unsure about their benefits, we have put together a guide to disc brakes. read it here.
