If you've been paying attention to the early season pro racing in the Southern Hemisphere you might have noticed some less than subtle new gear on the heads and feet of the Quick Step Floors and BORA-Hansgrohe cycling teams, including three-time world champion Peter Sagan. That new gear? Brand new S-Works shoes and an updated S-Works Evade from Specialized. That colour? Hyper. Acid. Lava.
S-Works 7 Shoes
What makes the perfect cycling shoe? Building on the popularity of the previous generation S-Works 6 shoe, the S-Works 7 brings some new technology to the party and amps up all the key stats that you'd expect to see in a high-performance road shoe.
Exceptional power transfer? Tick. Specialized have used their stiffest and lightest FACT Powerline carbon fibre plate to maximise power transfer with a Stiffness Index of 15.0, with the overall weight of the shoe coming in at just 224g.
Superior comfort? Definitely. The S-Works 7 comes with a Body Geometry sole and footbed which is ergonomically designed and scientifically tested to boost power, increase efficiency, and optimize alignment between the hip, knee and foot. The upper of the shoe is constructed from Dyneema Mesh, a super strong but surpisingly low weight high-tech fabric, and TPU to create no-stretch zones for the ultimate in connection and comfort, and has a roomy toe box to boost comfort. Your foot is held firmly in place by the PadLock heel construction which not only locks things in place, but is claimed to improve acceleration, and two brand new independent BOA S3-Snao dials for on-the-fly micro-adjustment.
If Hyper Acid Lava isn't quite your style, the S-Works 7 also comes in Acid Lava/Acid Purple, red and - probably our favourites - classy and understated full black or full white. Pair those up with a good pair of socks and an S-Works Tarmac and you might just have the best looking road combo going...
S-Works Evade II Helmet
As if a brand spanking new pair of shoes wasn't enough, Specialized have also unveiled a new and updated version of one of the most popular helmets in road cycling over the last few years - the Evade. Worn to victory in races like Paris-Roubaix, the Tour de France and the World Championships, the original Evade paved the way for aero road helmets, claiming a saving of 40 seconds over 40 kilometres compared to a conventional road helmet.
And now, Specialized claim that the Evade II is the fastest road helmet out there after extensive wind tunnel testing, shaving an extra 6 seconds off the statistics for the previous generation helmet. But the new helmet is about more than just aerodynamics - frequently, you'll see and hear complaints about a lack of ventilation in aero helmets, and so Specialized have set out to set this right. With deep internal channels, large vents and aligned exhaust ports, air is drawn in and channeled over the head to keep things cool without adding unneccesary vents which affect the aerodynamic performance. Adjustments are made with Specialized's Mindset II micro-dial fit system, and you'll also find some, lightweight DryLite webbing straps and a Gutter Action brow pad to keep things comfortable.
Available in Hyper Acid Lava (to match your new S-Works 7 shoes), the S-Works Evade II is lightweight and provides plenty of protection without looking bulky, while it also feels comfortable on your head and looks good - and fast. If you fancy a slightly more subtle design, the Evade II is also available in black, white and red.
