With winter in full swing and the roads and trails taking on a wetter and darker side it can sometimes be hard to keep those pedals turning. Here at Rutland Cycling we've asked our cycling mad staff who think nothing of a wet and cold ride into work or a filthy day in the woods to pick out their top winter bikes.

1) Specialized Crux E5 2014 Cyclocross

You don't need to be in a race situation to enjoy this cyclocross bike. With greater tyre clearance and wide spaced cantilever brakes the Crux is the perfect bike for when the roads throw everything winter has to offer at you.

2) Saracen Urban Cross 1 Hybrid

Whilst we all love a shiny bike with all the latest kit on, sometimes we just need a solid and dependable tool for the job. When winter rears its ugly head and the thought of leaving an expensive carbon bike locked up outside in the rain sends shivers down your spine, it's time to jump on an Urban Cross. As the name suggests this bike is at home in the city and if you need something you can depend on even when everything else is stacked against you then this is the bike for you.

3) Forme Longcliffe 1.0 Road Bike

A comment used by our of our long standing machinics is Campagnolo wears in just as Shimano wears out. How much truth there is in that is debatable, but equally nobody can contest the benefits of the positive feel a Campag set up gives when wearing thick gloves more suited to an artic expedition than a bike ride. Why not inject a bit of Italian flamboyance into your winter with this Veloce equipped bike at an unbeatable price.

4) Specialized Diverge Sport A1 2015

Described as a 'mountain bikers road bike' is a fair assessment of the new Diverge from Specialized. When the thought of spending more time cleaning your mountain bike than actually riding it isn't top of your list why not stay clean and still get your cycling fix. A compliant ride and all weather stopping from the disc brakes mean that this is a great bike for road cycling all year round.

5) Trek Superfly 7 2015 Hardtail

With full suspension bikes offering so much these days it is easy to forget the benefit of a well sorted hardtail. The Superfly from Trek is top of the list for many of our staff and it doesn't take too many winter induced suspension bearing replacements to remind you why the humble hardtail is the first choice for any mountain biker in the winter.
