Clair Parfrey is a Women's Bike Ambassador and Expert Bike Fitter at our Whitwell store. Recently, she took part in the Tour of Cambridgeshire Chrono - the world's largest Time Trial, held on closed roads around Peterborough.

I'm a pretty normal wife, mum of four and grandmother of three working at the Rutland Cycling Whitwell store. Some people may not agree with the 'normal' bit though. I love riding my bike - anywhere in any weather.

I took up cycling seven years ago, mainly to lose weight, but also to have a bit of 'me time' when I wasn't working, or being a mum or a wife. But now things may have got a bit out of hand! I took up time trialling, really just to measure improvements in my fitness, and on Saturday 3rd June I found myself at the top of a start ramp with flashing lights and disco music, with a chap counting down from 5! It was the Tour of Cambridgeshire Chrono - a time trial of 17 miles starting in Peterborough Arena.

What a fantastic event - a real must for every cyclist! Indoor warm up facilities on turbo trainers manned by friendly Rutland Cycling staff who help you get your bike set up, mechanical support if you have a last-minute glitch, and a buzzing atmosphere.

For some the event is a serious one - a qualifier for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships - while for others it is just a great day out. There were bikes of all styles and ages - classic road bikes through to full on time trial rigs with disc wheels. For me it was both - I was in the fortunate position of having qualified for the World Championships at the Tour of Ayrshire in April (a shorter event in colder weather).

The Tour of Cambridgeshire Chrono was a fantastic ride in really warm sun, but there were a couple of things I discovered that I need to work on over the next few weeks:

  1. The saddle!!!! Whether it was my clothing, the heat, or the distance something has caused me to have a small saddle sore. Need to see a bike fitter!
  2. My current bike is not legal for use at the World Championships so I'm off to pick up a new one from Giant Store Rutland!
  3. Cornering - I really lose time here so skills practice need to be incorporated in my training programme.

For now, it is back to work at the Whitwell store and training in the evenings.
