Our Top 5 Memorable Tour de France Crashes

In little over 4 weeks' the Tour de France will embark for the 101st time, with the Grand Depart right here on British tarmac (Leeds, West Yorkshire).

The race will see a total of 22 different professional cycling teams cover 21 stages that equates to more than 3500 kilometres and some of the toughest stages in the history of La Grand Boucle.

With that in mind, we take a look at our 5 most memorable Tour de France crashes...

5. The Lance Armstrong Shortcut

In at number 5 in our list, is Lance Armstrong's ingenious shortcut from the 2003 edition of the Tour de France.

Although, Lance Armstrong wasn't involved in this crash, his quick thinking and riding skills deserve credit. Especially for eyeing out such a ridiculous shortcut...

4. Flecha and Hoogerland collide with TV car

Many of you will still remember this crash from the 2011 edition of the Tour de France.

Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil-DCM) and Juan Antonio Flecha (Team Sky) collided with a French TV car which launched Hoogerland into a barbed wire fence, and Flecha into the road with force. Fortunately, both riders were able to continue with the race and finished the stage, unbelievably!

3. The Policeman Crash

In at number three on our list of top Tour de France crashes is this one from the 1994 edition. What makes this the more painful, is it was only stage 1.

Dubbed 'The Policeman Crash', simply because Belgian rider, Wilfried Nelissen rode spectacularly into a Policeman who leaned out into the road. This incident caused a number of riders to crash including 'man of the moment' Laurent Jalabert.

2. Jens Voigt vs. Mountain

Number 2 in our list of Top Tour de France crashes is legendary hard man, Jens Voigt's.

Trek Factory Racing rider, and fans favourite Jens Voigt didn't bail just once, but twice in this stage, with the mountain coming off second best on both occasions.

1. Sandy Casar Crashes into a Dog

In at number one is Sandy Casar's horrific collision with a dog. It's not nice to see a dog being hit by a cyclist, but amazingly, Sandy Casar managed to get up and win this stage, which makes it our most memorable Tour de France crash.

Unfortunately, we're not sure whether the dog in this video survived. We sure hope so!
