A relatively new name in the world of fitness tracking, Wahoo have made great gains with cyclists in the UK through their easy-to-use bike computers, and look set to continue upsetting more established names like Garmin with their products being used by the like of triple world champion Peter Sagan and his BORA-Hansgrohe team.

So, who are Wahoo? Located in Atlanta, USA, Wahoo have set out to create a whole suite of apps, sensors and devices for runners, cyclists and general fitness enthusiasts. Designed to suit any level of rider, Wahoo's products aim to bridge the gap between cutting edge fitness technology and the everyday athlete to bring you reliable, easy-to-use data that can help enhance your training and improve your performance, all at an affordable price.

From products like the innovative KICKR indoor trainer, Wahoo have branched out into cycle computers with their ELEMNT range, now available at Rutland Cycling, which make use of dual-band Bluetooth Smart and ANT+ technology to connect to a variety of iOS, Android and desktop apps to put powerful data right in your hands. Central to the ELEMNT range is the ELEMNT Companion app which allows you to easily set up the computer to suit your preferences via your smartphone. Hook it up via Bluetooth and you can customise your settings, personalise the display screens by dragging and dropping your preferred stats, plan workouts, and link your ELEMNT to your favourite apps and wireless sensors. Once set-up, the unit has three chunky buttons on the front which let you zoom in or out to display more, or less, of the data that you want to see. That connectivity can also push call and text alerts from your phone straight to the unit while you ride.

With a range models to choose from, which ELEMNT is right for your riding?

Wahoo ELEMNT Roam

The latest addition to the ELEMNT range is the new ELEMNT Roam, big brother to the Bolt and designed for a new need, not a new breed - it takes all of the features that people love about Wahoo computers and wraps them up in a more capable and complete package. The experience of riding is still the most important development factor for Wahoo, and the new unit embraces an appetite for adventurous riding across all sorts of terrain by delivering you the tools you need to explore, but in a simple, easy, way. You can still see your watts and heart rate if you want - but the Roam will also give you smart navigation, on the fly re-routing and mammoth battery life. It's all about adventure, exploring further, going off road and losing yourself without getting lost, explains Jose Mendez, Director of Product Development at Wahoo - it all combines into this idea of making exploring more achievable.

The Roam builds in easy to use navigation and mapping with built in map packs, and a slew of easy to use smart navigation options. Once you're ready to set off that navigation is easy to see too, thanks to the new colour screen - a first for Wahoo. Combined with the ever-popular features that riders have come to love from Wahoo, like the Perfect Zoom function, smart app-based connectivity, and aerodynamic mount, and you have an almost complete GPS solution for most riders.

Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt

Offering many of the same features as the ELEMNT Roam and ELEMNT, the ELEMNT Bolt has an ace up its sleeve - aerodynamics. Designed in tandem with its mount, the Bolt has been CFD tested to be aerodynamically superior to all of its competitors when strapped to your bike with Wahoo claiming that for a 40km time trial ridden at 21mph, you'll be 12.6 seconds faster than if you had another computer mounted to your bike instead. That saving is achieved with the large smooth surface area created by the integrated mount to reduce wind resistance, and by tapering the sides of the Bolt in-line with time tested aerodynamic forms.

Look out Garmin, the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt is a good GPS computer with better battery life than the Edge series

Inside the unit, you get the same super easy-to-use setup and smartphone connectivity, completely wireless set-up, turn-by-turn navigation and structured workout integration. Slightly smaller than the ELEMNT, the bolt has a 2.2 screen, 15 hour battery life, and weighs a measly 60g. Available on its own, you can also get the Bolt as part of a bundle with the TICKR heart rate monitor and RPM speed and cadence sensors.

Coming in at the top of Wahoo's range is the ELEMNT, their complete GPS cycle computer - with a 100% wireless set up, the ELEMNT sets out to take the complexity out of using an operating a bike computer while providing all the functionality you need out of a GPS head unit.

As you'd expect for this level of device, the ELEMNT comes with pre-loaded with maps of almost every country in the world, with turn-by-turn navigation prompts and wireless integration to Strava and mapping platform Ride with GPS. Looking for a caf stop on your ride? Through the Companion app you can search for somewhere suitable and it'll generate a cycling-friendly route and push the navigation through to the head unit. Alongside navigation, Wahoo have linked up with training platforms like TrainingPeaks and Today's Plan to integrate workouts into the ELEMNT so you can see your training plan and execute structured workouts with on-screen notifications and prompts from the LEDs around the edge of the unit. Last but not least, the ELEMNT integrates with Strava Live Segments so you know just when to push to claim that KOM.

The software is probably the best out there. The connectivity with the smartphone app is superb and makes it very easy to set the computer up and to make small adjustments to its functionality on the move.

The ELEMNT has a 2.7inch screen, a 17-hour battery life and comes with three different mounts - out front, stem and time trial. Available as a stand-along unit, you can also pick up the ELEMNT as a bundle with a TICKR heart rate monitor and RPM speed and cadence sensors.

Wahoo ELEMNT Mini

Looking for something a bit simpler? The ELEMNT Mini is the bike computer for those that want maximum data in a mini package. As a standalone unit the Mini provides accurate speed, distance and time but - as with the rest of the ELEMNT range - really comes into its own when paired up to your smartphone, allowing you use the GPS and Live Tracking functions, capture a full ride history, and push call and text notifications to the unit. Out of the box, a speed sensor is included allowing you to track speed, distance and time without connecting your phone, along with a stem mount. Smaller than its siblings, the Mini has a 1.8 screen and tiny 31g weight.

The Wahoo Elemnt Mini, at just £79.99, has probably entered the market as the most competitively priced cycling computer around. Allow Wahoo to refine its craft and it will not be long till Wahoo is recognised for its cycling computers and not just its pro level turbo trainers.
