2018 Santa Cruz Blur 2018 Santa Cruz Highball

Santa Cruz Bicycles(EST:1993) are based in, you guessed it, Santa Cruz California. Currently boasting a range of 16 models of mountain bike that includes a full women's Juliana range. Made from either carbon fiber or aluminium, Santa Cruz (SC) cover everything from Hardtail to super-long travelled downhill machines. They also offer two suspension technologies; efficient single-pivot designs on certain aluminium bikes, and the legendry advanced VPP (Virtual Pivot Point) technology on all their 'higher end' models. VPP bikes are available with a wide range of component and suspension options to choose from, each hand-assembled to order in the Californian factory they call home. Today (20/03/2018) marked the release of not one but two brand new Santa Cruz models, The Highball and the re-imagined Blur. We thought we'd take the time and the pleasure to introduce you to these Rutland Cycling store-bound and exceedingly impressive new additions to the Mountain biking world, giving you a run-through the spec, showing you some pics and filling you in on when, where and how you can get your hands on one!

    2018 Santa Cruz Blur

    • Available in - Carbon C & Carbon CC
    • Wheel size - 29"
    • Front travel - 100mm
    • Rear travel - 100mm
    • Designed for - Endurance & XC

    Overview

Hugely popular when first launched it was first launched in 2002, The Santa Cruz Blur is back and means business. Many Variations of the Blur featured over the years post 2002, including a 4X , TR models, a longer travel LT model and finally lighter carbon designs. In 2013, the dawn of the age of the 29in wheels was witnessed within the cycling industry and the production of the Blur XC was put on hold. But like a 2-wheeled, carbon Phoenix, The Blur has reformed out of the ashes and – now in its third conception, looks to be the real-deal.  Its replacement in 2013, The Santa Cruz Tallboy , continues to be popular but considering the new models 130mm travel and ever-slacker angles, it's not a pure XC racing, super-speedy demon anymore. This left a gap - a gap that could only be filled by the original speed freak (After Lemmy of course), the 100mm Blur was the ideal gap filler and has been revamped, revolutionised and now re-released. Result!

    SC blur 2

The Blur is a ride fast, ride far, ride harder than your heart can take kind of XC race bike that only Santa Cruz could make. Light enough to scorch hot laps and tough enough to endure a long-distance beating, the Blur is certain to turn heads at the Cross Country Club and tear up the opposition out on the singletrack. The one-piece carbon VPP® rear triangle shares a similar twin upright architecture to the Santa Cruz World Cup-winning downhill bikes. Paired with a one-piece carbon front end, The Blur delivers a lateral stiffness and tracking ability you just don’t see on featherweight bikes of this genre. In the bike world, Blur is definitely better than Oasis.(Though the 5-speed, high stemmed Raleigh Oasis will live forever in our memories...)

The Blur doesn’t just race, it rips race courses a new A-line with its Inspiring geometry built around a 69-degree head tube angle that drives you to take those sketchy rough lines, flying past those who stand between you and the podium. At just 2060g (approximately) this is the Californian company's lightest ever 100mm VPP® suspension bike. VPP® is already one of the most pedal efficient engineering principles in the history of mountain bike design and once you throw dual lockout build kits into the mix, you’ve got more thrust on demand than the Doc’s DeLorean.

    SC BLUR GEOMETERT

All this comes without any obvious trade offs. The Blur carries the same lifetime frame and pivot bearing warranty as all other Santa Cruz Bicycles and even the optional lightweight 29-inch Reserve carbon wheels are covered for life too. No matter how arduous your next XC adventure, the Blur is ready to go full gas, 24/7.

    Carbon series rim

At the base of the Blur is Alex James cleverly disguised as a fully carbon frame. Poor jokes aside - Santa Cruz actually offer models constructed with either ‘C’ or ‘CC’ standard frames with the latter 'CC' models becoming lighter and stiffer due to the application of higher modulus carbon fibre. The frames are light regardless of which option you go for with complete bikes coming in at 9.93kg (For comparison two average sized house Cats would weight about 10kg and they don't even have gears or VPP suspension). With a 69º head tube angle, the frame is dropper-post and dual remote lockout compatible with internal cable routing - It's also 1x specific, but with excellent groupsets from Sram and Shimano, the range of gears should be wide enough to prevent spinning out. A threaded bottom bracket, Boost spacing, 29" wheels, two bottle cage mounts and a bolt on down tube protector complete the package and all contribute to the  overall aura of greatness that surrounds the new Blur frame .

There will be Four sizes available (Small to Extra Large) and with 100mm of travel front and rear, VPP suspension and aggressive angles the Blur is well balanced and fast. Really fast. The Blur is available in two frame colours, classic Santa Cruz styling and five different models. The models range from a World Cup Standard Blur CC that features a Sram XX1 groupset and rolls on the Danny MacAskill tested Santa Cruz Reserve carbon wheels –  Supported by the an ultra plush Fox suspension system (Fox Float Factory DPS shock/Step-Cast 32 Factory fork). The CC/XX1 is listed at £7899 so it doesn’t come cheap, but you can be sure it’ll well worth every penny if you’re lucky enough to ride one . The entry-level Blur C is listed at £3699 and is equipped with a SRAM NX 1x drivetrain and built around a frame constructed from lower modulus carbon than the CC X01/XX1 models. Suspension comes in the form of the highly regarded Fox Float Performance DPS shock and Rhythm 32 fork with WTB STP i19 wheels rounding off an impressive component spec considering the C/NX1 is only the entry level!

    Overview

Moving on from the resurrected Blur, Santa Cruz is also releasing a revised Highball to provide for those to riders that prefer to race and ride on a lightweight Hardtail. The new model features a host of subtle geometrical changes to make it more compliant. These alterations to the geometry include the implementation of a longer reach, slacker head tube angle, lower standover, and longer wheelbase. The new, full carbon frame is is 0.2kg lighter than last years and has also been redesigned to support the aggressive riding position gained promoted by the angles of the frame. Boost spacing is once again featured and combined with the lowered, kinked seat-stays it leads to the creation of an extremely stiff-riding chassis. Now only available in Carbon fibre and 1x groupsets (See the Santa Cruz Chameleon for an aluminium, trail orientated bike), The Highball is the XC racer's dream with brilliant handling and precision downhill coupled with a climbing ability that will see the competition left for dust at the bottom of the hill whilst you’re already half-way down the other side!

    Highball-Geometry-Chart

Santa Cruz is supplying the Highball in 5 different options, With selected models already in our Rutland Cycling Stores already. With two C and three CC frame options ranging in price from £2799(C/NX1) to £6599(CC/XX1) the new Highball features the same groupsets seen on the new Blur and, Depending on the model you go for, comes supported by a 100mm FOX Rhythm 32 or via 100m FOX Step-cast 32 forks (Elite, Performance or Factory). All forks are remote lockout, controlled from the handlebar. The stylish and aesthetically pleasing frame is designed to accommodate a dropper post but this doesn't come as standard and is finished with a 27.2mm carbon post, bolt-on downtube protector and three bottle mounting options. The 2018 Highball is, like the Blur, available in four sizing options.

    highball 1

A cracking Hardtail alternative to the softness of the Blur, Santa Cruz claim the Highball is at home in a range of cross country environments — from XC sprints to 24-hour suffer-fests. The low-angle seat stays join the seat tube below the top tube junction which prevents annoying trail chatter – Always a bonus!Interestingly, the same development team behind the MacAskill-proof carbon Reserve wheels were the same folks responsible for the Highball’s claimed superior ride feel , achieved by their Meticulous application of carbon in only the most needed areas allows them to produce a really light frame that retains bags of torsional stiffness for the high-torque pedalers and provides strength for those braving the sketchy lines. These numerous qualities are backed up by the reliability of the threaded BB and a genuine lifetime frame and carbon wheel warranty.
