    Car rack hero

Fitting your bike in the car need not be a struggle on your next cycling adventure. This car rack guide will explain all the options available to cyclists, whether that is a family or a single cyclist. There are four type of car racks available; boot mounted, tow-bar mounted, roof mounted and spare-tyre mounted. This guide will cover the technical aspects, and the pros and cons of each option to help you make the best decision for your car and bike. Most cars can use any type of carrier, however consideration must be given to cost and time spent on attachments to accommodate the car rack.

Factors to consider when purchasing a bike rack

There are a few important factors to consider when you first start shopping for a car rack. You must first consider your budget and how much you intend to spend on a car rack. You should consider how many bikes you need to be able to carry, and if this needs to be interchangeable or constant. It would also be wise to consider what kind of distance you plan on travelling with your bike and how often you will need to take your bike with you. Thought should also be given to the ease of fitting the car rack and how compatible your car is with the different types of car racks.

    Boot mounted

Boot mounted car racks tend to be a popular option as they allow for a large amount of bikes to be carried and are considered one of the most cost effective types of car racks. They tend to fit many different types of car. However they also tend to be the least secure option for car racks. If this rack covers your number plate or rear lights you will also need to purchase a light board.

    Pros

    • Can carry many bikes
    • Fit many different cars and there are options available for different type of cars
    • Inexpensive They don’t require extra attachments

    Cons

    • Least secure option If not fit right it may fall off
    • Can’t get into the boot
    • Bikes are easy to steal
    • Could draw police attention if your number plate and rear lights are obstructed
    • They don’t usually come with locks

    Tow-bar mounted

Tow-bar mounted car racks clamp securely to the tow-bar attachment of a car. These car racks allow cyclists to carry many bikes and are perfect for family cycling trips. However, you will have to pay the extra money for a tow-bar attachment and some older models may not allow access to the boot. If this rack covers your number plate or rear lights you will also need to purchase a light board.

    Pros

    • They are very secure
    • They can carry a lot of bikes
    • Security can be good on these racks as many come with locks
    • Unlike roof racks they don’t cause drag and largely increase fuel consumption

    Cons

    • They are expensive and you will have to pay out for a tow-bar car attachment to use one
    • They cover your number plate and rear lights, so you will need to pay to accommodate this
    • Older versions don’t allow you to access the boot

    Roof mounted

Roof mounted car racks attach to the roof of a car by clamping to carrier bars. They tend to be reasonably priced and secure. Unlike boot mounted car racks they also don’t obstruct views from the rear-view mirror or cover the number plate or rear view lights. However they will cost extra as the bars will need to be attached to the roof of the car, and they tend to only fit between three and four bikes.

    Pros

    • You can still access the boot of the car
    • They don’t obstruct the view from the rear-view mirror
    • Very secure and many come with locks
    • They can be used for other purposes
    • Reasonably priced
    • They allow for the number plate and rear lights to be seen

    Cons

    • You have to lift the bike on top of the car and be able to secure it
    • It can be easy to forget about the items on the roof, which could cause problems with height barriers
    • Roof bars will be an extra cost
    • The car will consume more fuel, due to the drag
    • They can only fit a maximum of four bike, some smaller cars may only be able to fit three

    Spare-tyre mounted

Some companies make car racks specifically for cars that have a spare-tyre carrier on the back. These car racks attach to the spare tyre carrier and don’t require any extra attachments. These bike racks are easy to use. However they only allow for a small amount of bikes to be carried.

    Pros

    • Easy to fit
    • Don’t require any extra attachments

    Cons

    • Require your car to already have a spare-tyre carrier
    • They only fit a small number of bikes
