Benefits of Commuting With an E-Bike

       Words by Kathryn Dickinson

As the number of cars on the roads increases year on year, more people are looking to alternative ways to commute, get into town and visit friends and family. Public transport is an obvious choice but with the average cost of rail fares increasing by 3.1% and a staggering 55% increase in bus fares over the past decade, this perhaps isn't the most cost-efficient way to change your travel habits.

One option that is becoming more attractive is switching 4 wheels for 2. Cycling instead of driving regularly can have huge benefits to you both physically and mentally. Cycling isn't for everyone and some people can be put off by the thought of having to pedal their way around. Thanks to the increase in popularity of E-Bikes recently, cycling to work has just become accessible to all!.

    Cheaper than a car

It is estimated that it costs on average, £162 per month to run a car in the UK, this amounts to £1944 a year which is a significant amount. A bus or train pass can set you back hundreds, if not thousands of pounds a year which again, doesn't bode well if you are looking to save money and your carbon footprint. On the other hand, the start up costs for an E-Bike may be similar to a car (around £2000 for the bike) but once you have purchased the bike, there are minimal running costs. Some of these being; charging (it is estimated to cost 15p to charge an E-Bike which could last you a week of usage), servicing fees (not compulsory but a good investment), and replacement parts (varies from bike to bike). In the long term, running an E-Bike will save you hundreds of pounds a year and time spent in traffic.

#TeamRutland ambassador and commuter Michelle Brideau has been sharing her thoughts on E-Bike commuting: "At first glance, an E-Bike may seem expensive, but after you calculate the savings of going car-free or even car light, it will pay for its self in no time. Most people underestimate how much their car costs them and never really add it all up. A car has a lot of hidden costs (oil changes, MOT's, insurance, emissions tax), as well as the day to day costs of owning a car like petrol and parking."

    Get fitter

"It's pedal-assisted, that's cheating…", "You can't get fit with an E-Bike…", just a few excuses we hear when the words electric and bike are spoken in the same sentence. It's true that it is easier to cycle with an E-Bike but that doesn't mean you can't get your heart rate up on the bike, there are different levels of assistance which means if you want to put in more effort you can simply turn the motor to eco-mode. Even just a few minutes of cycling a day can improve your health both mentally and physically, you'll be amazed at your change in attitude when you spend your commute to work or trip into town on a bike, out in the fresh air away from the ever-increasing British traffic.

A study by researchers in Finland found there were significant benefits to cycling to work; including reduced cardiovascular risk factors and increased fitness. There are tonnes of studies and personal accounts about the benefits of cycling instead of driving, an E-Bike makes cycling so much more accessible to those who are either no fit enough or don't think they have the time to cycle.

    Get fit with an E-Bike

    save-money-with-an-e-bike

"Then there are the health costs of a sedentary lifestyle. If you cycle to work, even on an E-Bike there are health benefits to getting your body moving. People who cycle to work are less stressed, happier, have significantly less chance of getting cancer, have enhanced cardiovascular health, lower cholesterol levels, and cycling regularly prevents elevated blood pressure levels. Now if there was a pill to do all that, most people would be lining up to buy it.

    Breeze past the traffic

One of the biggest bug bears for most drivers is traffic. You can sit for minutes at a time, waiting for the lights to change, wondering where everyone else could possibly be going at this time and taking up space on the road, and don't even mention the frustration at driving behind a tractor! When you cycle to work, this wasted time is massively reduced. You can take the slower country lanes that are avoided by the school parents and 09:00am office workers, and nip through the traffic by using bike lanes. Trust me, you will feel very smug riding past all those people in cars who have yet to discover the benefits to cycling!

    commuting-on-electric-bike

When you cycle you also get rid of the panic of trying to find a parking space, and one that doesn't cost an absolute fortune, parking in town or city centres can cost up to £10 for a day and this may still involve a decent walk into town or a long winded bus journey through every neighbouring village! Most town centres and cities will have ample bike parking right in the middle of all the shops. You can park up for free and be in and out of town in half the time. Sound appealing?

    folding-electric-bike

"One of the great benefits to riding to work is the reliability, your commute is much more predictable, you don't get stuck in traffic, and there are no train delays to worry about. In my years of commuting, I've never been late. In fact, I road my e-Brompton to the interview of my current job because I knew it was more predictable than any of my other options and I knew I wouldn't be late. Cycle commuting is a great way to start and end your day. Sometimes on beautiful sunny days, if I have time I even take the long way home to enjoy a little time to myself, I can't say I've EVER done that when I drove or took the train!

    Demo an E-Bike

If you want to try before you buy, we offer demo bikes that you can try for free in store or hire for a whole weekend for just £49.99.

What E-Bike is best for you?
