Endura-Sustainability-Hero-2

Since their inception in 1993, Endura have focused on creating high performance, no-nonsense apparel that delivers where it counts – on the ride. Leading the way for technical cycling outerwear, Endura have become the benchmark when it comes to functional, durable kit. Because of this they are consistently selected by the world’s top athletes, with a roster that spans from heavy-hitting triathletes Lucy Charles-Barclay and Tim Don, to innovative, envelope pushing MTB athletes Danny MacAskill and Kriss Kyle.

“All Tribes, One Planet”

It is no secret that creating such specialized kit takes a toll on the environment, making sustainable clothing is a hard task. Every step of the process from the energy and water used in production, to packaging and shipping leaves its mark on the world.

Endura pride themselves on their awareness of the current climate emergency. As a recent member of the Pentland family of brands, Endura shares their status as a market-leader for corporate responsibility – but what do they do differently? From planting one-million trees to running an inhouse repair service, read on below to see how Endura really make a difference.

One Million Trees Per Year

In their biggest step towards combating the climate change crisis yet, Endura have pledged to plant 1-million trees every single year for the next 10 years.

Ten. Million. Trees.

In a world of natural disasters and fast fashion brands, Endura are taking the necessary steps to offset and battle the situation that Earth currently faces. Trees help to reduce the quantity of carbon in the atmosphere drastically, with research indicating that planting and increasing the number of trees is overwhelmingly the most effective way to offset emissions.

This is not an effort that Endura are building to either, with planting efforts already being underway in Mozambique, Africa. The planting hundreds of thousands of mangroves in protected areas is ongoing, with each tree having the capacity to trap over 12kg of carbon every single year. That's around 937 tonnes per planted hectare.

Closer to Home

On our doorstep Endura are planning to plant 80,000 native birch in their home of Scotland, solely in protected areas for carbon capture purposes. This ensures that these trees are not planted just to be chopped down, allowing them to continue removing carbon from the atmosphere long into the future. This headline approach is one of many ways Endura plan to make the environment a priority, with their “All Tribes, One Planet” focus requiring business wide change.

PFC Free Since 2018

Poly-fluorinated chemicals (PFC’s) are man-made compounds, commonly found in the water repellent coatings and waterproof membranes of outdoor clothing. These chemicals are difficult for the environment to break down, can remain for years once released and links have even been made between certain PFC’s causing harm to human development.

PFC-Free-1

Many outdoor brands strive to improve their environmental footprint and are making the move towards PFC free chemistries. Gore-Tex, Patagonia, and Endura’s fellow Pentland brand Berghaus are all pushing to remove the chemicals from their clothing lines.

Beating them to it, Endura clothing have been proudly PFC free since 2018, going above and beyond the necessary legal requirements in all locations where their apparel is sold. Endura use an eco-friendly water repellent treatment known as DWR M™ which is both PFC free and Bluesign® approved, protecting both the user and environment. Since 2014 Endura have also been using PTFE free waterproof membranes, another compound which does not break down easily in the natural environment.

On top of this, Endura also developed a range of bio-degradable water proofing sprays and clothing cleaning agents, designed to help maintain the repellent nature of the high-performance fabrics used.

Packaging

A whopping 98% of Endura’s packaging can be recycled, with the brand pushing towards new solutions in regards to poly-bags and plastic clothes hangers. This has been achieved through removing laminate finishes from both card packaging and tags, further decreasing their environmental footprint.

Built to Last

Look around at the trail-head and there is a 99% chance someone there is wearing a pair of Endura baggy shorts that they have owned for years. Endura kit is built to last. Their durability is legendary within the cycling world, designed to deal with the rigours of daily MTB, urban and road riding. This durability allows their apparel to stay in circulation for longer, which considerably reduces its overall environmental impact.

Sewing-1

Making clothing with this level of sturdiness has won Endura a host of fans worldwide, keeping their clothing in your kit rotation and out of the bin for longer. Fast-fashion is destroying the planet one cheap, poorly made garment at a time, with UK clothing purchases alone generating 26 million tonnes of CO2 in 2016. Endura combat this by creating kit that stands the test of time, which when coupled with smart price points makes their kit hard to beat!

With cyclists riding harder and faster than ever it’s inevitable that clothing may be damaged through use, but why scrap your kit when it can be repaired? Endura offer a repair service direct from their Scotland based plant, allowing you to extend the life of your very own products for a small fee.

Sewing-2

Corporate Responsibility

Despite still being privately owned, Endura are part of the Pentland brands group who strive to make all their decisions in good conscience, however hard that may be. Both Endura and Pentland aim to reduce their environmental impact throughout all of their operations, from reducing staff air travel to hosting digital rather than physical conferences.

Although Endura recognise that there is still much more to be done, environmental responsibility is at the forefront of all that they do. This ensures that the consumer can use their products with a clean conscience, safe in the knowledge that their fresh new kit will go the distance.
