First Ride: Scott Addict 20 Disc 2018

       Words by Aaron Scott

       on 21/07/2017 09:46:20

Super lightweight, with redesigned, comfortable geometry and disc brake equipped, the all-new affordable Scott Addict is a great bike for any ride, and perfect for the UK

    Key features

    • + Lightweight frame redesigned from the ground up. Focused on Endurance, not racing.
    • + Thru axle disc equipped for enhanced braking.
    • + Disc-optimised fork and rear traingle house 32c tyres for smoother, faster ride

Replacing Scott’s previous endurance road family, the Solace, the new Addict family is based around a completely redesigned frame. Blending the Swiss company’s trademark lightweight philosophy with a comfort geometry, it’s a sophisticated new range to consider alongside the Giant Defy, Specialized Roubaix and Trek Domane families. Add to that new MF carbon frame a full range of hydro disc thru axle models and you have a choice of bikes absolutely ideal for UK conditions.

I rode the Addict 20, the Shimano 105 model, on some challenging terrain in the Swiss Alps, in conditions uncannily familiar to the UK rider. Riding out in low cloud and steady drizzle I got to test stability on a greasy surface. Later in the day, cloud gave way to sunshine and the lightweight frame was tested on steeper Alpine climbs as the thermometer soared.

In the first few kilometres the first thing that struck me was the increased clearance on the front fork and rear triangle. An Addict with 32c tyres! Bear in mind though that the Addict family is now a broad church. The ‘RC’ branch retains the distinctive race geometry, while this new non-RC Addict takes that lightweight heritage but repurposes it for the sportive or all day rider. So it was that on the wet descents on uneven terrain the 32 tire leant reassuring confidence. Coupled with the superior braking afforded by the discs, I could gradually pick lines that saw me descending quicker. For sure, this combination allows the rider to use the brakes later, not braking acceleration throughout the descent but allowing speed to be maintained deeper towards the corner.

On the climbs, the Addict ascended purposefully. Here I got to enjoy the flipside of the set-up, the lightweight frameset synonymous with Scott eradicating any concerns about a wider tyre and disc brake combo on the inclines. This dual win formed the abiding memory from a hugely enjoyable first ride on the Addict: the high-end feel associated with Scott, especially where weight and stiffness are factors on a climb, combined with a confidence and smoothness stemming from the new geometry and brake/wheelset combination. It is the perfect set-up for the UK cyclist, and, with a competitive price point, I’d expect it to be very popular with the discerning rider in 2018.
