    Focus Jam² 2019 Range Guide

       Words by Kathryn Dickinson

First launched back in 2017, the Focus Jam² claims to give you the ride feel of a non-electric bike with all the power for conquering those epic trail rides. The rise in popularity of E-Bikes over the past few years has been dramatic, with more and more people turning to electric to power their rides each year we are treated with better specced, lighter E-bikes.

The Jam² is Focus' full-suspension E-MTB, the full 2019 range comes with an integrated battery in the down tube and for those of you looking for an even bigger adventure, you can purchase the Focus TEC (Tailored Energy Concept) pack which gives you a massive 756Wh battery. The top models in the range are built with carbon, this reduces the weight and increases the stiffness, giving the rider a better feel out on the trail on those climbs and descents.

    Quick Links

    The Frame

Within the 2019 Focus Jam² range we have both carbon and aluminium models, the carbon bikes have carbon front triangles and rear aluminium triangles. Along with reducing the weight, the addition of carbon gives a stiffer ride with more uphill flow… the dream after suffering up climbs on your non-electric bike for the last few years. The rear triangle is made from triple butted 7005 hydroformed aluminium to round out a solid frame. Even just by eyeballing the bike, you can see the width of the toptube/headtube area, giving you better steering ability and control for those speedy descents.

All frame sizes in the range have Stable Stiffness Per Size (SSPS), Focus' own sizing technology that means that every bike in the range offers the same ride characteristics. This is achieved through specifically developed carbon lay-ups for every frame size, giving you the ideal weight-to-stiffness ratio. Another design integrated into the frame is the AIRFLOW system, this provides optimal ventilation for the integrated battery. This technology allows fresh air to flow into the downtube where the battery is located and removes the risk of an overheated battery.

Pretty much a staple in higher-end MTB's, the Jam² comes with a dropper post, this range features a mixture of Fox Transfer Performance and KindShock E30i depending on the model of the bike.

    Fork and Shock

The Jam² range features 150mm travel in both the front and the rear, this firmly places the Jam² in the all-mountain bike range as it's just as at home on the climbs as well as the descents. On the forks, Focus have put a mixture of RockShox Revelation RC, Fox 34 Rhythm on the bottom to middle of the range bikes, and DT Swiss Hybrid F535 One on the top of the range bike. All forks offer the best absorption for most types of riding, the higher up the models you go, the more you get for your money.

    focus-jam2-rear-shock

On the Jam² Focus have used their F.O.L.D (Focus Optimised Linkage Design) technology. F.O.L.D offers enhanced rear suspension, this is achieved by diving the travel into two phases: the first phase of the rear triangle curve is degressive meaning the suspension responds extremely sensitively to the smallest bumps and dips, the second curve is progressive to take on the larger impacts. This all adds up to a rear triangle that feels longer and gives the rider more control.

    The Groupset

Throughout the range there is a mixture of Shimano XT 8000 on the lower models, Shimano XT Di2 on the middle of the range, and Shimano Deore XT Di2 on the top range bike. Shimano are one of the biggest names in groupsets so you are guaranteed a decent set of gears. All models in the range, except a few of the lower spec alloy models come as 11 speed offering a great range of gears for tackling the trails.

    The Wheels

Within the range there are two different wheel size options, 29" or 27.5". With 29" wheel you have better rolling ability, meaning you will glide through the trail, on the 27.5" you have more agility for negotiating the twists and turns. If you want a bike that includes the benefits of both size wheels then you're in luck, Focus have included their 'Drifter' bike, 29" on the front and 27.5" on the back, think of it like the Hovis Best of Both of the bike world.

    focus-jam2-front-suspension

Wheelsets vary throughout the range starting with Race Face AR30, moving on to Race Face Aeffect Plus, and finally the DT Swiss H1501 Spline One on the drifter. For tyres you have Maxxis Reckon on all but the Drifter which has Maxxis Ardent, both great, grippy tyres for all conditions.

    The Battery and Motor

Focus have chosen to stick with the Shimano Steps E8000 motor in 2019, a firm favourite in the E-MTB community which offers great power and control. Most E-Bikes these days are always increasing the battery size with 500Wh being the norm for most brands. Focus decided to buck this trend and stick with their 378Wh battery, but why have such a small battery? Focus conducted a study and found the majority of riders only rode for a maximum of 35km and to carry around a large battery was pointless. Focus argue that the 378Wh battery will be enough more most riders but if you are wanting a larger battery for touring and epic rides you can purchase a TEC pack which doubles your battery capacity to 756Wh.

    focus-jam2-2019-range-review

By using a smaller battery, Focus have reduced the weight of the Jam². Focus further reduced the weight of the bike by fully-integrating the battery into the downtube. By fully encasing the battery, there is no need for a lock cylinder or battery clamp which cuts about 3kg off the weight of a normal E-Bike. This does mean the battery is harder to remove and must be kept inside during the winter to ensure the battery doesn't get too cold.

The optical display unit for the motor is located on the handlebars to allow the rider to view their battery life and which mode they are in, particularly handy if you plan on riding for an extended period of time and need to keep a tab on your battery life. The On/Off switch for the bike is conveniently placed on the top of the toptube, just behind the headtube, there is also a walk mode for when you the trail becomes too much and you have to take walk… obviously none of us have ever walked up a section though.

    focus-jam2-2019-display-unit

    The Brakes

In both the carbon and alloy models there is a range of brakes, starting with Magura in all the alloy models and either Shimano BR-M520 or Shimano Deore XT 8020. All brakes are hydraulic, giving the rider incredible control during braking and the confidence to ride faster.

    The Range

How to choose the correct model for you

With so many bikes to choose from it can be difficult to know which is the correct bike for you and what all the names mean.

In the Jam² range, the number after Jam² denotes what material the bike is made from. If it starts with a 6, it is aluminium, and if it is a 9 its made from carbon. The decimal place then tells you what spec level the bike is, with 7 being the lower spec and 9 being the highest bike in the range. If it says plus at the end, it will have 27.5" wheels so you can pick based on your wheel preference size.
