Giant Anthem X2 2012 - product review

   Words by Aaron Scott

   on 29/08/2013 18:27:00

Staff rider Wiggy hired the 2012 Giant Anthem X2 from our Giant store and put it through its paces in the Peak District. Here he tells us how he and the bike coped with the climbs and descents he faced in the Peaks.

After an early start, myself and two local riders headed up to Hope in the Peak District for a day’s training in the mountains. An excellent opportunity to test ride the Giant Anthem X2.

Low mist and cold temperatures greeted our start but after 10 minutes of riding we were in bright sunshine on top of Mam Tor. During the long climb I put the rear shock into ProPedal and it gave the back end a stiffer more positive feel. Once on the top, the view was incredible.

We continued to ride along the ridge then tackled the long technical descent down to Edale. Being an avid Road Cyclist means I'm not being the most technically able mountain biker! I hung on as the bike and I bounced over the wet rocks - the suspension was working over time. The bike handled really well and was very compliant.

After catching our breath we rode a short road section through Lee Farm then on up to Jacobs Ladder. The terrain was rocky and wet making the climb impossible so I shouldered the bike and ran up Jacobs Ladder.  I almost forgot I was carrying a full suspension bike as its weight resembled the same as most hard tails.

After I had consumed an energy bar (my body was starting to feel the effect of all the climbs) we continued our ride to a small cafe in Hayfield.

Full of cake and coffee we started our return ride.

Heading straight up a very long climb I stiffened the front Fox Forks and Rockshok rear shock and again it climbed almost effortlessly, digging into the wet ground.

The biggest test was the descent of Jacobs Ladder! I set the suspension to maximum travel and we proceeded to bounce our way down catching other riders as we hung on. Something about the Giant Anthem X2 makes you want to ride it fast and hard, but it feels reassuringly safe - it did exactly what I asked of it.

If you are after a full suspension bike with 100mm travel that’s capable of everything you throw at it then the Giant Anthem X2 is for you. It works really well and will certainly improve your riding ability.

Overall, I enjoyed riding the Giant Anthem X2 which I demoed from the Hire fleet here at Rutland Cycling.
