Road E Main

Words by Tom Worsfold

“Take the fast lane” – Giant

Giant’s Road-E+ range uses a custom tuned Yamaha motor to keep you going strong when the going gets hard. Whether headwind or hill, the Road-E has your back kicking out punchy acceleration for up to 140km+ (mode dependent) and could be a strong decision if you decide an E-road bike is on the cards. But in a market with everyone toting the latest and greatest, what sets the Giant apart? Read on below to find out its features.

Discipline: Road

Usage: Endurance road cycling - comfort and compliancy, meets E-bike acceleration

Models: 2 models, the Road-E+ 1 & 2 (Starting from £3199.99)

  • - ALUXX SL aluminium frame
  • - Yamaha Syncdrive Pro motor – Giant specific performance tune
  • - 4-sensor system for seamless power boost
  • - Ridecontrol Evo command centre
  • - Energypak 500wh lithium-ion battery
  • - Rack mounts for mudguards and pannier rack options

The frame itself uses Giant’s ALUXX SL aluminium tubeset. ALUXX SL mostly consists of 6011 alloy, a material designed to offer a class-leading strength to weight ratio. Why not carbon? Aluminium helps to keep the cost low and the value for money high, with the weight benefits of carbon being negligible when used alongside the powerful Yamaha motor.

The Road-E+ frameset uses endurance orientated geometry, which gives the bike a stable and confidence inspiring character. A relatively slack head-angle keeps the steering in check, feeling responsive without being overly twitchy, much like the popular Giant Defy road bike.

Motor & Battery

The demographic for the Road-E+ is broad with its appeal stretching all the way from die-hard road cyclists looking for a new training tool, to commuters who are after a versatile and practical choice to cut fuel costs. Upon first sight, the bulky downtube which houses the battery stands out. This is an issue that plagues many current E-bikes but one that exists for good reason - unlike the slimmer motor/battery systems such as Fazua and eBikemotion the Giant’s Yamaha system provides a hard-hitting 80nm of torque.

This is both double the power and battery size of the eBikemotion X35 system, providing (depending on terrain) up to 150km of assisted riding, making it perfect for longer rides and casual cyclists looking to put the miles in. This is the Road-E+’s niche and is where it fits into the market, with the silky smooth and powerful Yamaha motor making headwinds and hills a worry of the past, ensuring your only focus is on enjoying the ride.

RideControl Evo Display

The RideControl Evo places all your information exactly where you need it, displaying in depth ride data including estimated range and battery capacity. The Evo has been upgraded with a sleek, aluminium housing, with improved durability and overall integration, and also offers Bluetooth connectivity for ease of updating.

Five power modes are on offer through a handlebar mounted remote, ranging from Eco with 100% motor support, to Power mode with 360% motor support. A feature that sets the Evo apart is the USB charging facility, which allows the user to charge their phone, GPS or other device whilst on the go, adding extra versatility which stands out amongst other systems.

With two models on offer, both are equipped with Shimano’s 11spd groupsets – 105 on the Road E+ 2 Pro and Ultegra on the Road E+ 1 Pro. Both are top performers, with 105 incurring a slight weight and performance penalty over Ultegra. 105 is well known for its workhorse reliability however, with Ultegra being a more race/performance orientated groupset.

Both models use Maxxis Re-Fuse 700x32c tires, which offer plenty of protection against punctures with Maxxshield bead-to-bead protection. The Road-E+ also comes tubeless for all models in the line-up, a massive plus for commuters looking for ease of use and reliability.
