    Ibis Ripmo First Ride Review

       Words by Kathryn Dickinson

       on 21/03/2019 16:03:17

Tom Worsfold, Sales Assistant in our Specialized Concept Store Nottingham, was lucky enough to try out the brand new Ibis Ripmo GX Werx Edition on his local trails.

I have been cycling for as long as I can remember, with my early teenage years being made up of trips to Welsh trail centres with my Dad and friends. I have recently moved to Nottingham which has a strong local scene, an amazing group of riders and a range of nearby cycling locations, all on the doorstep of the Peak District. With a background in dirt jumping and freeride I am always looking to get the most out of the bikes I ride whatever type they are!

Ibis have been on the scene for over 30 years, and in that time have built a strong following for their unique and boutique frames. They have a history of both initiating and bucking trends, creating iconic, exciting products, and bringing with them an appeal seldom seen in many other brands. Ibis are one of the latest brands to be brought into the Rutland Cycling portfolio, with a range of build kits based on their Mojo HD4 and Ripmo framesets being available through stores and online.

With the Nottingham store having the Ibis range on display I was offered the opportunity to test and review Ibis’s latest and greatest big-wheeled weapon, the Ripmo. In 2018 we saw many brands bringing longer travel 29” bikes to the market, as well as the successful rise of the 29” wheel in both the EWS and world cup DH. Wheel size is one of the most hotly debated topics in mountain biking with many stating that the larger wheels will never be as fun as their 27.5” counterparts, but it is forward thinking products like the Ripmo which quickly put this idea to rest.

    About the bike

The Ripmo features all the hallmarks of a classic Ibis frame, with distinctive flowing lines and great attention to detail. The model tested here was a GX Werx edition, a higher end specification featuring an upgraded 29” Ibis carbon wheelset and a Fox Factory suspension package. The Ripmo comes in a range of smart configurations, with a choice of drivetrains and suspension to suit a range of budgets and rider needs.

A true highlight of all the builds on offer is Ibis’s own brand wheelsets, which feature an incredibly current 35mm internal rim width that offers unparalleled grip when paired with the provided 2.5” Maxxis WT tire combo. The carbon 942 rims I tested certainly help towards the bikes capable “point and shoot” nature on the trail, creating a balance of tracking and compliance that oozes confidence when pushed into rougher terrain and tight corners.

With a background in DH and freeride, I looked to push the Ripmo to the limits of what a modern all-mountain bike is built for at some local venues that offered a varied selection of terrain and features, everything from bikepark-esque jumplines to classic Peak District gnar. The bike was setup to Ibis’s recommended suspension settings which provided a solid baseline to build on depending on conditions and terrain.

The Fox Factory 36 and X2 suspension rewards those who are willing to put the time in to perfect the array of adjustments, but could easily intimidate those new to suspension terminology. Thankfully the recommended settings from Ibis’s own guide are easy to follow and leave the bike with supple, plush setup, which when combined with the DW suspension linkage neutralises harsh technical terrain and deals well with square edged hits.

The Ripmo had a planted feel that felt comfortable in rough terrain, bordering on enduro-esque levels of speed that mirror that seen on longer travel bikes, far more geared towards descending. The bikes low weight allowed it to easily be moved from one piece of dodgy line selection to the next, as well as allowing it to be easily unweighted and picked up over larger rocks and roots.

The Fox 36 upfront held its line perfectly, the 160mm of front travel working well with the bikes unique geometry to give a feeling of overall safety that inspires confidence in the descents and encourages you to push boundaries. This feeling of confidence is further instilled by the forks reduced offset, giving the impression of a far slacker head angle than the rather tame 65.9° would suggest on paper, a feature that I found to allow the bike to feel well-weighted when pushed hard into corners.

The Ripmo’s 145mm rear end keeps up well, and although it felt bottomless when taken off drops and jumps, would occasionally bring a subtle reminder that it was not an overly long travel bike when on rougher trails. Despite this, I found that it was hugely encouraging on descents and that the roomy levels of standover gave room to manoeuvre the bike both when on the trail and airborne.

It was on the climbs where the Ripmo’s low weight shone through. Helped no doubt by the bikes carbon hoops and steep seat tube angle the climbs melted away with relative ease. The DW link provides great anti-squat characteristics that did not have me feeling the need to reach for the climb switch for anything other than long grinds. Taller riders may find themselves feeling the need for a longer seat tube length, a compromise of the Ripmo’s incredibly low standover height. This is partially remedied by the smartly specced 185mm Bike Yoke dropper on the size large model I tested, with the longer travel allowing for an efficient climbing position.

    Final thoughts

Whilst the bikes geometry may be just shy of “progressive” by some manufacturers standards, clever features such as the reduced offset fork allow this bike a descending credibility that should truly not exist alongside it’s spritely climbing ability. The Ripmo had to work hard to warrant its high price tag, but it truly is a unique product that would excel at everything the UK could throw at it, without ever feeling over-biked on more tame trails due to its agile feel and low weight.

If you are after a confidence inspiring all-rounder that will have you slashing your Strava times and leaving you with energy to spare on the climbs, the Ripmo is well worthy of its boutique price tag.
