    Focus Jam² Ride Review

       Words by Kathryn Dickinson

Luke from our Head office team was lucky enough to test ride the brand new Focus Jam² 9.6, Luke put the Jam² through it's paces on his local trails and has written down his thoughts.

    First Ride Review

Focus are a big name in the Enduro scene with riders like Olly Wilkins and Joe Connell on their roster, but recently they have been making an even bigger name for themselves with their eMTB’s, as with any MTB rider, I’m always excited to get my hands on a new electric mountain bike, and the Jam² certainly got me very excited about going out for a ride.

The first thing you immediately notice on the bike is the colour, Focus have definitely given careful consideration to the 2019 range of colours and they do look truly stunning in person, The Jam² 9.6 comes in 2 colours, a bright blue that will definitely get you noticed out on the trail, and a more subtle matte grey colour.

    Battery and Motor

The bike features the proven Shimano E8000 motor which is a firm favourite of mine for MTB, the quick engagement of power creates the ultimate sense of uphill flow and definitely makes steep hills as fun as descents! Focus have hidden the 378Wh battery in the downtube of the bike, a fully encased frame design not only helps to make the frame lighter, but as strong as possible. Although 378Wh doesn’t sound like much by some brand standards, Focus have hit the nail on the head with the weight of the bike, making it super-playful, whilst still having enough range to get you to the end of the trail.

If 378Wh isn’t enough for your next mammoth adventure, Focus have thought about that too, with the addition of their T.E.C. pack, you can increase the capacity to a mega 756Wh, giving you all the power you could require for the longest of rides. I found that the 378Wh was more than enough to get me round my usual red route a couple of times.

One thing in particular I enjoyed about the Focus Jam², was the layout of the Shimano system, for example, the screen is neatly tucked away on the handlebars to ensure no damage should you happen to take a fall, as well as the trigger to change the assistance modes being a normal shifter, doing away with some of the standout remotes some of the brands use, this is definitely a system that has been designed with mountain-biking in mind.

    The Frame

On the 9.6 plus model you benefit from a carbon main frame and an aluminium rear triangle, giving you the maximum bang for your buck. The Jam² definitely feels like one of the lightest electric bikes I have ridden and the combination of the carbon frame and lighter battery certainly go a long way into helping achieve this.

The bike I rode was specc’d with a RockShox Revelation at the front, a direct descendant of the Pike with 35mm stanchions for a stable ride experience. I would confidently say that this fork is the perfect blend of value and performance and with 150mm of travel, you can confidently smash your lap times at your local trail centre, as well as enjoy days doing Enduro or Downhill riding. 150mm of travel at the rear courtesy of the RockShox Deluxe R, that coupled with Focus’ FOLD technology gives you amazing small bump responsiveness as well as decent progression when taking on bigger hits.

Shimano’s XT drivetrain has been renowned for being one of the best drivetrains in the MTB scene for decades and certainly lives up to that reputation on the Jam², each gear change is smooth and near-silent as you push through the gears with the power of the motor behind you. Coupled with Shimano 4 pot brakes with 200mm rotors you have enough stopping power to control you on steep descents.

Maxxis rubber is the perfect addition to this bike, the 2.8 tyre size gives you perfect levels of grip in all weather conditions, something that I noticed in particular in the harsh UK winter conditions.

Is the Focus Jam² for you?

So, who is the Jam² for? Following my ride I have definitely been won over by this bike, a true Mountainbikers eMTB, carefully thought out to give you the best riding experience possible. If the weight of an eBike was putting you off, the Jam² is definitely the one to have a look at, when riding descents, at times I had forgotten that I was riding an electric bike – until the motor kicked in and powered me back up to the top! The T.E.C. pack is definitely another thing to consider if you are doing a couple of long rides in a year, the extra battery can go a long way into helping your range. All-in-all, one bike for all of your riding, perfect for UK trails as well as trips further afield.
