    Reviewed: Kask Valegro

       Words by David Hicks

       on 22/01/2018 14:23:54

Already worn to two Grand Tour victories on the head of Chris Froome and Team Sky (subject to any future suspensions or asterisks…), the Kask Valegro is the very latest helmet from the Italian brand and promises to be their lightest and most ventilated helmet to date. We put it in the hands of our Graphic Designer and 2nd Cat roadie, Mike, to put it through its paces.

    Kask Valegro Road Cycling Helmet
    • HyVent - Structure and design of the shell implement the air flow and break up the exchangeable heat.
    • MIT Technology - applied to all Kask cycling helmets this guarantees higher safety and complete protection
    • Octo Fit - The anallergic and washable chinstrap is extremely comfortable and helps to avoid irritation of the skin.

    First impressions

First off, it’s clear how lightweight and ventilated this helmet is. With a weight coming in at a mere 180g, 70g lighter than the Protone, this is one of the lightest helmets on the market that you can get your hands on.

The all new design for the Kask Valegro provides the maximum amount of cooling through the use of its 36 ventilation holes, which completely cover the helmet from front to back. Design wise, this helmet largely resembles the shape and style of the Protone, but with a visible emphasis on increasing the ventilation. Where we previously saw smooth sections on the Protone for aero efficiency, KASK have cut away at the polycarbonate shell to help reduce weight and increase airflow in and out of the helmet. The most eye catching feature of this helmet’s interior is the lack of a front forehead pad. Instead, three wide vertical channels have been positioned here, channeling the airflow up around the head for maximum cooling. The profile of the helmet has been tested and refined by KASK’s engineers in conjunction with a wind-tunnel to get the best results in terms of thermo-cooling performance and aerodynamic efficiency, something that KASK previously nailed with the Protone.

Padding within the helmet is minimal, only featuring seven thin quick-dry padded strips across the length of the helmet. This minimal padding pays off, you can hardly notice that you’re wearing the helmet once it’s on. The helmet amps up the comfort with a smooth and comfortable eco-leather strap. The thicker strap with padding is a great feature that I’ve not experienced with a helmet before. It allows you to tighten the strap comfortably without the ‘cutting in’ sensation from thinner straps, and gives you peace of mind when you are really throwing the hammer down, that the helmet isn’t going anywhere.

    On the road

With the temperature tipping just above freezing I thought that testing out the Valegro’s 36 ventilation holes to their full potential, without a cap underneath, wouldn’t be the best idea. So I grabbed my nearest cap before putting on the Valegro. Other helmets that I’ve worn with a cap underneath have never seemed to be comfortable, often experiencing a digging in sensation from the cap’s seams. The Valegro’s adjustable retention system took full care of this. I was able to pull the binding down before tightening the dial, and this way the cap wasn’t being pressed into the back of my head and the helmet was still perfectly secure.

On the road the helmet seemed to keep the wind noise to a minimum, a great feature that you can really appreciate when you are listening out to your surroundings or chatting away to your mates about how nice your new Valegro helmet is on the club run. With the sun looking like it might make an appearance out on the ride, it was good to know that I could stash my sunglasses in the front or rear garages KASK have built into the ventilation holes. This allowed me to safely and easily grab my shades and put them on when the sun finally decided to come out.

I was surprised that even in the low temperature my head didn’t get cold, from the limited contact area and large number of vents the helmet has. Equally, I never felt as though my head was over heating while going for it up the hills.

    Our verdict

Overall, I was really impressed with this helmet. It’s a great helmet that has proven it can perform in any conditions you can think of. The KASK Valegro has clearly been developed with the pros and performance in mind. It’s highly ventilated, extremely comfortable, and looks absolutely stunning. If you are looking for a stylish helmet that you can comfortably wear and stay cool in all year round then look no further, this is the one for you.
