The Langma is Taiwanese brand Liv's  all-round super-bike for MY2018. Designed over two years of intense research and testing, The Langma is intended to fill the gap between the endurance focused Avail and the aerodynamic Envie, The Langma offers a fully-female specific frame - remaining consistent in their commitment to this method amongst the rise of 'unisex' frame designs that are becoming more and more prevalent within the cycling market, especially amongst high-end road bikes. Of course, women are perfectly capable of riding a men's or unisex bike, but Liv claims that its female specific bikes maximise comfort and efficiency for female riders due to their optimised geometry derived from research based on key physiological differences between men and women (E.G flexibility, reach, height etc).

    Langma Advanced SL0

The Langma has a similar outlook as the Giant TCR, but it certainly isn't just a 'shrink and pink' job. The Langma range differentiates itself from the TCR in numerous ways, coming equipped with tubeless-ready wheel systems and an option for hydraulic disc brakes whilst also being geometrically refined to adhere to the standards of unique 3F(Fit,Form,Function) Liv design philosophy. The top-end Langma models feature a variety of cutting-edge technology including an excellent, aerodynamic Contact SLR Flux stem that reduces drag by a whopping 1.75 percent. This unique stem is hollowed out for optimum weight-savings and provides additional aero-advantages to the frame. The unusually shaped spacers match the D-shape profile of much of the tubing, stacking neatly on top of each other and making it simple to create a race-ready, aggressive riding position. However, by moving the spacers about and flipping the stem you can also give yourself a more upright riding position to add a slice of comfort to your riding should you prefer. Furthermore, an oversized bottom bracket area and asymmetrical seat-stays ensure an efficient power transfer and a smoother pedalling stroke whilst an integrated seatpost on the SL models adds extra compliance, leading Liv to claim that the top-end Langma Advanced SL 0 is the most balanced bike they’ve produced to date.

Not only is it perfectly balanced, The Langma is also the lightest bike ever manufactured by the boffins at Giant/Liv HQ, with the Advanced SL 0 model weighing in at a feather-like 6.1kg (Size : M) - (For reference that's only about seventeen times as heavy as a Can of Campbell's Condensed Tomato Soup 317.9 ml/0.35kg). This ultra-low weight has been made possible via the use of Giant’s top-level carbon fibre, with size-specific layups to ensure each frame provides the exact balance of low weight and responsiveness. Liv has also made sure material is only used where it’s required, combining with the semi-internal cable routing to give the frame its sleek profile whilst maintaining ‘tuned stiffness’ (Sufficient stiffness for racing).

    corynlangmaadv 101

Despite excelling in the field, The Langma isn't all about flat-out speed. Liv calls this bike the "queen of the mountains" and whilst it's certainly designed to do well at sprinting and all-round racing, climbing is also very much an integral part of the Langma’s DNA. The Langma provides fantastic climbing efficiency, something you'd expect from a bike named after Mount Everest’s Tibetan name 'Qomolangma' whilst promising to allow the rider to 'fly to the summit'. The subtle engineering features of the carbon layup provides the perfect amount of flex in the frame in order to smooth out the rough, improving rider comfort by reducing road buzz and supplying extra traction as the bike can absorb impact from the ground efficiently, promoting a sense of stability, balance and agility throughout. This is achieved by mastering the orientation of the carbon fibres and size specific layups using computer simulations that determine the optimum amount of material needed to provide the correct stiffness to weight ratio.

The frame itself has been developed to be as aerodynamic and light weight as possible. To hit that sweet spot between the two, as is required for a bike in this 'all-rounder' mould, a skinny seattube, asymmetric chainstays and aero shaped headset cap/spacers are fitted as standard whilst much of the tubing is rounded to reduce drag. Key areas such as the Variant seat tube/post and the MegaDrive downtube receive this aero treatment, leading to the formation of a D-shape in the cross section of the frame. The D-shaped down tube shifts to a squarer shape at the PowerCore bottom bracket, increasing the stiffness of this vital area and boosting the efficiency of the power transfer from the pedal stroke. The smaller sizes required in the women's bikes market has also meant that Liv could utilise a different manufacturing technique that permitted a more continuous frame construction, massively cutting down on the need for 'filler' material, significantly reducing overall frame weight. A more continuous frame construction leads to fewer joins, minimising points of weakness, increasing the strength of the frame directly. To complement the slender, flexible top tube, The D-shaped downtube is considerably thicker and combined the bulky PowerCore bottom bracket, increases the stiffness of this area, allowing for greater efficiency in terms of power transfer from the pedal stroke maintaining forward momentum.

    Langma size sheet

There are six bikes in the 2018 Langma range, each manufactured with different finishing kit, material and spec to move up or down the price points. Groupset wise, Shimano Tiagra,105,Ultegra,Ultegra Di2 and Sram Red E-tap frames are all available and are provided in sizes from XX small to large – The various Giant wheelsets are consistent in in size measuring 700c across the size range - somewhat interestingly Liv are providing tubeless-ready tyre/rim setups as standard on all models within the Langma range, a feature that helps the frame shave off even more unnecessary weight. There's enough tyre clearance to accommodate up to a 28c width tyre for winter riding or rougher terrain and for the tech-savvy, all frame set-ups come with RideSense ANT+/Bluetooth sensor installed. The bike's Stem length, reach and handlebar width are the important measurements where variation is seen - A medium sized model has a head tube angle of 72.5 degrees, a seat tube angle of 74 degrees, a stack of 546mm, a reach of 384mm and a wheelbase of 981mm with handlebars 360mm(XXS) to 420mm(L) and cranks of 165mm(XXS) to 172mm(L). The Giant OverDrive steerer systems give the rider unprecedented front-end steering performance via oversized headset bearings (1 1/2” lower, 1 1/4” upper) and a tapered steerer tube working in harmony to provide supreme steering stiffness.

A particularly exciting aspect of top-end SL Langma models is the Quarq DZero Power Meter. Quark has risen steadily in the power meter market, with the new DZero offering a ridiculously high-performing package.  One of the coolest new features is ANT+ and Bluetooth capability, which connects the power meter to both your smartphone apps and Quark’s own app, letting you update firmware and run diagnostics without the ANT+ key. The DZero also features an improved strain gauge arrangement, accelerometer-based cadence sensor, and a red and green LED status indicator light. The inclusion of the DZero goes some way to explaining the high price point for top-end Langma frames, with the going rate for DZero alone coming in at just over £1000! That being said, for riders who are all about efficient training, racing and measuring those gains, power meters are the one piece of tech guaranteed to improve your riding, making the DZero certainly something worth investing in.

All of the above makes for very impressive reading and if early indications are anything to go by the Langma can definitely walk the walk as well as it talks the talk. It’s perhaps no surprise that Liv's pro team, Team Sunweb, have already powered the bike to multiple podium finishes, including an early season win at Omloop van Het Hageland by Ellen van Dijk. Clearly the Langma is beginning to establish itself as one of the fastest bikes in the peloton, looking highly likely to dominate the competition throughout the hectic summer competition schedule.

    Langma 2018 Range Overview

    Langma Advanced 3

A lightweight and efficient racing bike designed to deliver all the speed, strength and stiffness required to give you the advantage over the competition. Featuring Advanced Composite technology with high performance Grade raw carbon material to give you an exceptionally high stiffness to weight ratio, The Langma Advanced 3 allows you to obtain the high quality Langma ride experience at a lower price point. Within the sub £1500 road market you'll struggle to find a complete bike that is as strong and lightweight as the Advanced 3 Langma. With 20 gears of Shimano Tiagra groupset you can expect responsive, smooth shifting as well as all the power you need to conquer the hills and bomb along the flats. The renowned Overdrive Steerer technology is specifically designed to provide precise front end steering performance by using oversized headset bearings, giving the rider enhanced comfort and accuracy in the steering and when combined with the Shimano Tiagra Calliper brakes offer you all of the stopping and steering power, and more, that you will ever need.

    Langma Advanced 2

The Liv Langma Advanced 2 features much of the same spec as the Advanced 3 model - The two major differences are seen in the upgraded Shimano 105 22 drivetrain that is lighter than Tiagra and offers a slightly wider gear ratio. The wheel set also gets upgraded to Giant PR-2 front and rear, bringing the overall bike weight down by a few all-important grams.

    Langma Advanced Pro 1

For the Langma Advanced Pro 1 frame you're supplied with an lighter wheelset as the PR-2 set-up is replaced by Giant SLR-1 rims. Furthermore, the steerer tube is upgraded to OverDrive 2, the most advanced steerer technology to date seen on Liv bikes and enhancing the already excellent steering ability of OverDrive 1. With a move back to the ultra-reliable 105 drivetrain, you can be sure to rely on the Advanced Pro 1 to offer a fantastic balance between durability, speed and responsiveness.

    • Tyres - Giant Gavia AC 1 Tubeless, 700x25, Folding
    • Wheels - Giant SLR-1 Wheel Set

    Langma Advanced Pro 1 Disc

The Disc brake frame option for Langma is the Advanced Pro 1 Disc model. Disc brakes, especially hydraulic ones such as the ones featured here, offer more consistent braking performance in adverse weather and better modulation, allowing you to brake later and with increased efficiency, maintaining your speed through the corners and on descents. Disc brakes do add weight to the frame and you will of course be limited to upgrading to other disc brake drivetrains as the frame will be geometrically unsuitable for calliper based systems. The Ultegra drivetrain supplied should be plenty sufficient though so it'll likely be a while before the need to upgrade arises (if ever!). The chainrings on the crankset are 34/50t paired with a wide 11-30t cassette that offers plenty of range for climbing even the steepest of hills. A press-fit BB72 bottom bracket finishes off the crankset along with a KMC X11EL-1 chain with this particular Langma model seeing the return of OverDrive 2 and SLR-1 wheels whilst a thru-axle (100mm front/142mm rear)provides even more stiffness to the front end of the bike to complete the package. Considering the spec you're getting, the sub £3000 price point represents a tempting choice for best the value for money frame option.

    • Frame - Advanced-Grade Carbon Composite
    • Fork - Advanced-Grade Carbon Composite w/OverDrive 2 Steerer
    • Drivetrain - Shimano Ultegra 2x11 Speed
    • Brakes - Shimano Ultegra Hydraulic Disc

    Langma Advanced SL 1

This frame option sees the continuation of Ultegra Di2, OverDrive 2 and SLR-1 wheels but what differentiates the Langma Advanced SL 1 from the models lower in the price range are its unique aerodynamic features such as a super-sleek integrated seatpost and specifically designed tube profile to minimise air resistance encountered by the frame. The Advanced SL 1 also benefits from the use of the highest quality carbon frame at Liv/Giant's disposal in its manufacturing process, leading to an impeccably stiff, light and compliant frame that is super speedy and comfortable for long hours in the saddle.

    Langma Advanced SL 0

The pinnacle of the Langma range and a truly brilliant piece of 2-wheeled ingenuity, the Advanced SL 0 was developed over two years with input from top Liv athletes from Team Sunweb as well as the finest engineers available to Giant/Liv. Manufactured using Liv’s ‘continuous fibre technology’, a process that results in fewer junctions creating lightweight frames that sacrifice nothing in regards to strength. By using the finest carbon frame material (the Advanced SL-Grade frame/fork combination weighs just 1155g!) the Langma Advanced SL 0 frame offers unmatched stiffness to weight ratio and featuring top-level OverDrive 2 technology, aerodynamic tubing, integrated seatpost, upgraded Liv Contact (forward) saddle, super-light, 30mm deep Giant SLR-0 rims, tubeless ready tyres and a gold standard Quarq DZero power metre (boasting a claimed accuracy to within 1.5% - anything within 2% discrepancy is nearing gold standard). As if that wasn't enough, the Advanced SL 0 is also fitted with Sram's awesome Red eTap 22 drivetrain that provides shifters inspired by race-car paddle shift logic that virtually eliminates mistaking upshifts for downshifts, while keeping shifting precise, fast, and easy. The ultra efficient, wireless rear derailleur performs amazingly in all conditions and offers a great range via the 50/34T chainring that when combined with the legendary Sram Red crankset you're looking at a truly mouth-watering frame option. With the way the market is going you can expect to see a disc option SL 0 standard frame sooner rather than later.
