New Specialized Turbo Levo Hardtail and Turbo Kenevo Comp Electric Bikes

If you’re in the market for an electric mountain bike, there’s a very good chance that somewhere on your shortlist you’ll have a Specialized Turbo Levo or Turbo Kenevo. Both boasting sleek integrated batteries, dedicated motors and top notch finishing kit, there’s a good chance one or the other will tick all the boxes you’re looking for in your new bike. But how do you decide which is best for you?

To help, we’ve pulled together all the information you need to know about each range with a closer look at two brand new additions to the range at an even more competitive price point – the Turbo Levo Hardtail 29 and Turbo Kenevo Comp.

    What's the difference?

A run-down of the spec sheet of both the Levo and Kenevo reveals a few similarities between the two ranges. For starters, both use Specialized’s own motor developed with Brose and both make use of the sleek, integrated down-tube battery which sets the design of the Specialized bikes apart from many competitors. Both display the battery charge status on the side of the battery and do away with the usual display on the handlebars – instead, the Levo and Kenevo get a small bar-mounted remote to cycle through the modes (you don’t have to always ride in Turbo mode you know…). With the exception of the new 29er Levo, both bikes roll on 27.5” Plus wheels and tyres to provide a little extra ride comfort and control for the extra weight an electric bike carries. Throughout both ranges SRAM covers shifting and braking duties, albeit in different forms.

So that’s all the similarities – but what about the differences? The key difference between the Levo and Kenovo comes down to travel. The Kenevo is built for big trail riding and downhill shredding with a mighty 180mm travel both front and rear. Combined with a slack 65-degree head angle and coil sprung rear shocks, the Kenevo is capable of tackling pretty much you can throw at it.

If you’re looking for more of an all-rounder, then the Levo might be more your cup of tea. With 150mm fork travel across the range you’re equipped to handle all but the gnarliest of UK trails, but with as much ability to pedal back to the top of the hill without breaking a sweat. If you opt for the full suspension models, that front travel is balanced out with 135mm of rear travel. Like your carbon fibre? The Levo range is also much more expansive than the Kenevo range, offering everything from entry level hardtail electric mountain bikes, all the way up to carbon S-Works models. The Kenevo range and lower specification Levo models share Specialized’s M5 aluminium frame construction.

For 2019, Specialized have decided to open up all the fun of electric riding to a wider audience by introducing new entry level models to both ranges. That means you get more capable bikes with less impact on your wallet, without ever having to wait for the uplift.

    Turbo Levo Hardtail 29

The new Turbo Levo Hardtail 29 opens up Specialized electric mountain bike performance to the masses with a new, lower price point – and adds all the fun, efficiency and speed of a 29er hardtail to a supercharged platform. With an M5 aluminium frame built around Trail 6Fattie geometry the Levo Hardtail 29 provides slack, confident handling, maximum efficiency and tons of speed. With the same integrated battery design, the new model packs 400Wh of trail-taming juice with the Trail Display charge indicator and mission control connectivity. Power comes from Specialized’s 1.2E motor which is integrated into the frame around the bottom bracket. Custom-tuned to trail riding, it intuitively reacts to the force of your pedaling so the harder you pedal, the more power it delivers.

    Turbo Kenevo Comp

If more travel is more your style, the Kenevo Comp brings total downhill performance to a lower price point – that means more money in your pocket, and less lactic-inducing climbs back to the top of the trail. Much like the pricier Kenevo Expert, the Comp gets 180mm travel courtesy of RockShox up front and Fox in the back, and the same M5 Premium Aluminium frame construction. Geometry is made for the trails with a low-slung bottom bracket, roomy top tube and ultra-short chainstays, plus the bike comes specced with an X-Fusion Manic dropper post. With instant engagement, fantastic heat management, a double freewheel design and smooth, consistent power output, the 1.2E Rx trail-tuned motor delivers plenty of juice for a day on the trail, backed up by the 460Wh integrated battery.
