Review: Kalkhoff Intergrale Excite I8 Electric Bike

Words by David Hicks

Review by Thomas Hague. Thomas recently used our E-bike demo offer to try out a Kalkhoff on his daily commute to work. Here's what he had to say about the bike and the service from Rutland Cycling.

I used the Kalkhoff Integrale Excite I8 2018 Electric Hybrid Bike for 2 weeks before Christmas. I commute to work in Manchester every day (12km each way) and cycle a bit in the evenings and weekends. First off, it was great to get a bike that had everything supplied that I need (pannier rack, full mudguards and decent lights - that I usually have to install after I’ve bought a bike) so was ready to go. Also had a kick stand which I don’t usually use but was surprisingly useful. The combination of front suspension and belt drive made it the smoothest ride I’ve had on a bike. This was my first time ever using an electric bike so I didn’t know what to expect. For the uninitiated, an electric bike assists your peddling. You still need to peddle but the battery makes the physical effort easy. If you want to increase the effort you put in, you can easily change the assist level the bike gives you to allow you to find the right effort-level for you.

The battery technology has come on some way since I looked at electric bikes a few years ago. The bike integrated the battery into the frame so it wasn’t obvious there was a battery although the frame is oversized – I presume to both cope with the increased weight the bike carries and help camouflage the battery. The battery can be charged either while it is in the bike (if you could park a bike near a socket) or, as I did, easily removed from the bike and charged indoors. The range of the battery is dependent on the level of ‘assist’ you have and a display on the handlebars indicates the battery load, range, speed, etc. Whilst the bike is able to be cycled if the battery is flat, I didn’t want to risk having to cycle a heavy bike so ensured I didn’t let the charge fall below 20% so was charging it approximately every 3 days. Using the bike to commute was a pleasure. The ride was 5 minutes quicker with the assist and I even overtook other cyclists on the way – usually it’s the other way around! On one of the mornings, there was heavy traffic on my normal route so I took an alternative route over a hill which I wouldn’t normally even consider. On another afternoon, I had a meeting with a customer and was able to cycle to the meeting a) because I could wear my work clothes as there’s no oily chain to get my trousers dirty and b) because I didn’t arrive too red-faced. I have a couple of teenage boys who really enjoyed riding the bike. Normally they would want lifts into town but were eager to ride the new ‘toy’ instead. Although I did notice that whenever the bike was returned, the power was always set to max. I really liked the way the bike came with everything I need to commute ready to go. It was a comfortable ride and made the commute easy. On the negative side, it is a heavy bike to manually lift/move and I enjoy the physical exertion of cycling traditionally. In summary, I enjoyed riding it and would recommend the bike for anyone who commutes (particularly over hills) and anyone who wants to get back into cycling but isn’t as fit as they once were.
