    Road Bike Accessories Guide

    Road accessories hero

Whether you are just getting into road cycling or a seasoned racing veteran of the tarmac, having the right kit to compliment your road riding is an absolute must if you want to beat those strava records and reach your full potential on two wheels. Having the correct accessories for your particular needs can revolutionize your riding, with the following guide specifically designed to give you an in depth introduction to everything you’ll need to transform yourself into super suave looking roadie -  prepared for any weather, breakdowns and eventualities.

Road Bike Guide > What bike should I buy? > Road Bike Size Guide >

Not wearing a helmet whilst riding your bike is (at the time of writing) not illegal. That being said, blasting along in the peloton at super fast speeds is all well and good until you clip the bars of the rider next to you and go hurtling towards the concrete at the rate of a concord jet - it is in this split-second, falling down moment that you’ll be grateful for the protective lid on your head shielding you from the worst of the impact and reducing the possibility that you’ll spend the rest of your days as a vegetable.  Definitely one of the most essential road cycling accessories you can buy, a road-specific helmet will focus on being as light and well ventilated as possible whilst maintaining there integral strength. Certain variations, such as TT helmets, will be designed to offer excellent aerodynamics and will have less ventilation and smoother lines in order to limit the air resistance encountered by the rider.

Mudguards work by covering the top of your wheel, ensuring that spray from the road won’t hit you in the face or splatter up your back ruining your favourite jersey. There are specific mudguards for road bikes, with some all-road models having extra clearance and mudguard mounts to make fitting this accessory far easier. That being said, even the roadiest of road bikes can have mudguards fitted for winter & wet weather riding. They of course add weight, but the benefits of being warm, dry and clean outweigh the marginal gram gains by some distance.  Mudguards also help to keep your bike clean, reducing the time spent having to hose everything off when you get home! If you do want to keep your bike shiny and clean, Muc-Off have an excellent range of specifically designed cleaning products to cover all parts of your beloved bicycle.

    Bags and Luggage

Whether you’re carrying a set of Allen keys, money, phones or an entire wardrobe on a long tour through the mountains, Road bike luggage is a key component in maintaining your comfort on longer rides and avoiding having to over-stuff your pockets or,god-forbid, wear a rucksack and totally shaft your riding position on a drop-bar frame. For shorter rides a simple saddle bag may be plenty sufficient to carry all of your essentials (e.g C02 canisters, tools and squashed,3 year old Twix).

If you are venturing further or regularly need to carry heavier items such as laptops on a regular basis, it can be extremely beneficial to invest in a rack and panniers so that the bike carries the extra weight instead of your body. You can get a variety of different racks, some fixed in place and some that 'float' of the seat-post - which one you go for will depend on the design of your frame and what it is able to accommodate. The wider tyre clearance of modern road bikes should make this slightly easier than before but it's still vital to check your measurements to ensure you don't end up buying a rack you can't use!

The technology that can compliment your riding is developing all the time. It wasn’t that long ago that our cycling forefathers would spend their days checking big OS maps kept in the handlebar bag of their trusty steel Raleigh. Nowadays you can get GoPros and cameras that can document your every ride, whilst most bikes will have space to fit a bracket to hold your phone for easier access to your music, messages and emergency google maps. Whether you simply want a computer that measures just speed and distance or an all-singing and dancing GPS system with maps and strava-reading capabilities, a computer is an excellent tool for training and improving your performance.

Garmin Edge 1030 GPS Bike Computer Bundle

The highly anticipated new Garmin Edge® 1030 GPS Cycling Computer is here. Now available in a bundle, the Edge® 1030 comes equipped with a heart rate monitor, cadence and speed sensor

    • Weight - 123g
    • Battery Life - Up To 20 Hours
    • Battery - Rechargeable Lithium-Ion
    • Dimensions - 58mm x 114mm x 19mm

GPS has rendered the humble OS map obsolete. With the introduction of Strava sections and the constant addition of new routes and updates, a GPS computer can really help you improve your cycling by taking you to new areas with confidence and enabling you to keep track of your times. Cycle computers and GPS allow you to just check your basic speed and distance at the entry level all the way up to touch-screen devices that can send messages to your mates at the higher end of the market.

Want to know more? Visit one of our Tacx demo centres and try out Zwift for free!

So there you have it - a brief overview of what you'll need to conquer the concrete this season. Of course you can't just go out riding in a helmet, you'll need some clothing too! Our Cycle clothing guide can help you there. Not got a road bike already? Read through our detailed buying guides to find the right one for you!
