Local family business Rutland Cycling, has won the Retail Excellence award at the Family Business Awards. The Rutland-based cycle shop, who this year opened its fifth shop at Peterborough, was announced winner of the headline award at a prestigious black tie ceremony and dinner at Leicester’s Athena in front of 300 guests from 44 finalists, independent judges and sponsors.
We’ve been recognised for all the hard work put in, in every part of the business, to deliver the highest standard of retail experience in our region. It’s also great to be recognised as a leader beyond the bike industry, across all retail sectors. These awards recognise the customer experience in-store and online, recent projects and future plans and aspirations. We’ve all done so much in these areas in the last 12 months – opening a new store, introducing new brands, launching click and collect, expanding our popular rides and events programme – we really deserve this! We’re incredibly proud of our people and the way they go the extra mile every single day to deliver ‘the Rutland Difference.’
David Middlemiss, Managing Director
All finalists had to present to, and be interviewed by, a panel of experienced business leaders, including directors of Speedo, Boots Opticians and PwC, in a truly independent process.
Now led by the second generation of the Archer family, Rutland Cycling began life in 1981 as a simple cycle hire cabin on the shores of newly-created Rutland Water. The business now incorporates Britain’s biggest bike shop at Whitwell, a Giant brand store at Normanton, and three more cycle shops at Grafham Water, Fineshade Wood and Peterborough, as well as sister company the RockBlok. In addition to its retail stores, Rutland has also built a successful online presence through its website, www.rutlandcycling.com.
Now in their sixth year, the Family Business Awards are run by third generation family business The Wilson Organisation and are the Midlands’ only independent, not-for-profit initiative to recognise and celebrate the work, achievements, innovation, operations, growth and performance of family businesses.
The Retail Excellence award was an exceptionally hard-fought category, so Rutland should feel rightly proud of their achievement. They are highly worthy winners.
Charlotte Perkins, MD of The Wilson Organisation
Rutland Cycling Director Sally Middlemiss was also highly commended in the Director of the Year (under 40) award.
