    Scott Addict Range Guide

       Words by Harry Archer

The only family of Addicts you'd want near your house, the 2018 range of Swiss brand Scott's Addict road bikes encompasses not only the traditional RC (race climb) frame options, but also a brand new endurance range replacing Scott’s previous endurance road bike, the Solace. The new Addict family is based around a completely redesigned frame that combines the company’s trademark lightweight philosophy with a comfort geometry. The range offers an accomplished new option to consider alongside the Giant Defy, Specialized Roubaix and Trek Domane ranges that are already successful within the endurance market.

Scott are a brand that began in the 1950s developing ski poles. Soon diversifying to bikes, they created the first aero handlebar in 1989 which went on to help LeMond to victory in the tour that summer. They were also the first to introduce the fully-carbon mountain bike to the mainstream market (1995) and have worked with Bosch in recent years extensively in order to create the new breed of electric bikes using lithium-ion batteries. Furthermore, they're championing road bikes at the highest level, with their own pro team, Mitchelson-Scott, competing regularly worldwide.

    Five Quick-Fire Questions

    What is the Addict?

Previously the Addict was designed to be the lightest, stiffest, most efficient and mountain goat like of all the climbing road bikes with the RC models producing some of the lightest frames year on year over the last decade. The range has now diversified to include an endurance based Addict that takes over from the previous endurance models (Solace, CR1) to offer a comfortable ride over longer distances.

    Are there Female-specific frame options?

Yes - sort of. Scott are strong advocates of using the same geometry on all their bikes - why alter the geometry for women if they’re seeking the same experience as their male counterparts? To this end, Scott Contessa Addicts' shares the same geometry as the unisex frames but feature shorter stems, narrower handlebars and women’s saddles to ensure the comfort of the rider isn't compromised. The Contessa Addicts' are available in one rim brake option and two disc brake options.

What's the cost of a new Addict? And are they all Carbon Frames?

The range starts at £1,598.99 for the Addict 30 and, as with most ranges, improves in terms of drivetrain and finishing kit as you head up the price points to £8,998.99 where you'll find the feather weight, super spec'd Addict RC Ultimate Disc Carbon. Both the standard and RC versions of the Addict frame are manufactured from Carbon and are tested extensively to ensure their high-performance. The Scott Addict RC’s frame is built from Scott’s high-modulus carbon, with a claimed weight of 790g for the frame and another 300g for the fork and is the same frame used by the pros on hilly sections of major races, proving it has an excellent reputation for performance within the highest echelons of the cycling community. The endurance Addict doesn't shirk frame-wise either, calling on all of Scott's extensive carbon fibre knowledge to produce a frame with a claimed 860g weight and a 360g fork. The HMF high-modulus carbon used light, stiff and leads to a bike that is built for comfort but can accelerate like Usain Bolt after 16 expressos when required.

    Scott Sports:The Carbon Experts >

So, just what is the difference in geometry between the RC and Endurance Addicts?

Scott describes the RC Addict’s geometry quite vaguely as “race”. To us muggles, this means that it's quite long and low, without leaving you feeling like you'll need the arms of Mr Tickle to reach the bars. The fork is a skinny tapered 1 ¼ to 1 1/8 inch, whilst Scott claims that the down tube-bottom bracket junction is the widest of any road bike currently on the market, creating an optimum power transfer through the pedals. The RC's stack is low and the wheelbase is short to offer a nimble ride and put the rider into an aerodynamic stance to reduce air resistance levels. The Endurance Addict has a shorter reach and higher stack to promote an upright, comfortable riding position. The head angle is kept the same as the RC and the wheelbase and seat angle have only very subtle positional changes. Therefore, when compared to other endurance bikes from the likes of Giant and Trek, the endurance Addict may not be as comfortable outright, but because you can get lower it'll be quicker - offering the perfect compromise for the racers at heart who want a little more comfort and compliance from their ride.

Which drivetrain set-ups feature on the Addicts?

When purchasing an Addict, one must remember that the frame is the USP and major cost associated with this model. The frames on all the Addict bikes are lightweight and extremely well made - A definite keeper. At the top of the range you'll find the expected Dura-Ace and Sram Force/Red variations but at the lower levels you may initially be surprised that certain group-sets (Tiagra and 105) are featured due to the high price point of the even the lowest spec'd Addict. However, in multiple ride tests it was found that the quality of the frame allowed for fantastic performance and efficiency despite having a lower-quality groupset than some of its major competitors like the Defy and The Emonda from Trek and Giant respectively. It's always easier to upgrade the groupset as you go instead of buying new frames all the time, so bare that in mind when comparing the Addict to bikes such as the competitors mentioned above.

    • Addict 30 rim/disc, Contessa 35 - Shimano Tiagra - A 10-speed, 2x10 Tiagra drivetrain is featured on the entry-level Addicts. The Tiagra is durable and efficient - It is only 10-speed though and for serious climbers it may be worth going for an Ultegra model. Nonetheless, a complimentary groupset for a bike with a quality frame such as the Addict.
    • Addict Gravel 30 disc,Addict 20 rim/disc, Contessa 25 - Shimano 105 - The Shimano 105 groupset is renowned for its fantastic value and performance for its cost. The shifting provided is smooth and crisp and the 11-speed drivetrain ensures you'll have a large ratio of gears to match the climbing performance of the Addict frame.
    • Addict 10 rim/disc, Addict RC 20 rim/disc, Contessa 15, Addict RC 15,Gravel 20 disc - Shimano Ultegra - An excellent mechanical groupset, Ultegra has benefitted from the trickle down technology from Shimano's top level Dura-Ace systems. The new Ultegra drivetrain offers stiffness and strength in abundance and is sure to keep pace with all but the top level of competitive riding.
    • CX RC Disc, Gravel 10 Disc - Sram Force 1 - The SRAM Force 1x is a game-changing upgrade for cyclocross bikes and now expands to triathlon, criterium, and other 700c disciplines, paved and beyond. The Force 1 crankset combines SRAM’s Force 22 carbon arms and forged aluminium spider with their world-class 1x11 MTB technologies. Featuring X-SYNC™ technology, the Force 1 crankset is engineered for complete chain control.
    • Addict RC 10, RC Pro, RC Premium Disc - Shimano Dura-Ace - Light, powerful and effective, Dura-Ace is Shimano's top of the range group-set. The system works seamlessly on the bike and is incredibly responsive and stiff. The Di2 electronic shifting can help to really dominate the hills and allows you greater control over your gears than ever before. Explore the Dura-Ace system in depth by clicking here.
    • Addict RC Ultimate - Sram Red E-Tap - Sram's innovative and market-leading electronic shifting system is featured on the Addict Ultimate. Offering mind-boggling levels of technology, the E-Tap gives the rider complete autonomy of their drivetrain, allowing them to reach the full potential of the bike and themselves with ease.
