#TeamRutland | Specialized Ambush And 2FO Shoe Review

       Words by Tom Worsfold

       on 29/08/2019 17:11:02

Words by #TeamRutland member Chris Teagles

Specialized hooked Chris up with an all new ANGi equiped Ambush helmet and some 2FO Flat 2.0 shoes, see how Chris got on with them below

    Specialized Ambush ANGi MIPS Helmet

Its easy to get obsessed with kit as a cyclist, drooling over new exciting bits of kit and tech. Electronically shifting gears and dropper posts for example have got the whole world of mountain biking talking. Something that I think is a far greater bit of tech, (and a fair bit cheaper than some fancy gears!) is the new Ambush helmet with ANGi crash sensor from Specialized.

Something that’s often overlooked when it comes to kit is helmets – not often needing to be replaced and with very little new features to boast about since MIPs was introduced. This isn’t the case with the Specialized ANGi. This is such a huge step forward in safety and peace of mind when riding solo. I often use the find my friends app to help people keep an eye on me when I’m out riding where its particularly difficult terrain. This helmet takes it one step further.

Simply put, there is a sensor on the back of the helmet that detects motion and talks to your phone via an app. You start off a ride with the app and the helmet tracks your location, if a head impact is detected from the sensor then an email and text message alert is sent out to selected contacts via your phone. Now I’ve been asked to test this helmet but as of yet I haven’t had the misfortune of having a big crash and I really hope I don’t. But it does reassure me that if I do my chances of getting help quickly are greatly improved.

Aside from the clever tech this is a really great helmet, comfy and adjustable with a strong adjustable peak design which is great and often a weak point of other helmets. With the weather as it has been lately it’s nice to be able to report that this helmet feels light and really well ventilated. Its fitted seamlessly into my riding routine and is a genuinely useful and reassuring bit of kit. What is also really handy is you can buy the sensor on its own for your existing helmet.

    Specialized 2FO Flat 2.0 Shoes

The perfect pair of shoes for mountain biking are hard to find; breathable, water resistant, comfortable on and off the bike and with loads of grip and durability. There are a lot of boxes to tick. I traded in my much loved pair of Fivetens to have a go with what Specialized have to offer.

Now straight off the mark, I think with the pedals I am using (Burgtec Penthouse composites) the Fivetens have the 2FOs beaten on the grip front. The famously good stealth rubber is a hard one to beat and stepping away from shoes I have used for years into a new pair I know it was going to be hard to beat. However getting more comfortable with the 2FOs over time they started to come good. They may not be quite as grippy as the Fivetens - that’s not to say they are bad; they grip really well and allow for great adjustability of your feet on the pedals as you ride.

Where the 2FOs come into their own is comfort. They feel really comfortable, loads of arch support and some ankle support along with flexibility in the sole means getting off for hike-a-bike up tricky rocks, roots or mud is so much more confidence inspiring. They feel like a really great pair of running shoes that you can also ride a bike in. Reasonably water resistant and breathable for those hot days I think Specialized have hit the nail on the head with a great all-round shoe.

I have been running these for 3 months now and I really like them, they seem to be pretty durable as well, if you could see past the mud, I think they would still look brand new! Specialized are great at making ergonomic and well thought out products, be it SWAT tools, helmets or bikes and these shoes are a great example of that.
