    Specialized Enduro 2017 Range Review

       Words by Aaron Scott

       on 14/06/2017 16:08:46

    Enduro-Hero

A real all-mountain executioner, the new Specialized Enduro range can handle pretty much anything you can throw at it. Downhill trails, technical climbs and all-day adventures are all in the capable hands of the Enduro, The latest range of bikes comes with a newly refined set of geometries, the new SWAT frame storage system and more travel than you can shake a stick at.

Best suited to nearly anything. With a light, durable frame, up to 170mm of travel and a spot-on geometry, the new Enduro offers limitless possibilities in terms of MTB riding. Trail centres? Check. Enduro? Check. Technical downhill? Check. If you only have room for one MTB, it’s hard to look any further than the Specialized Enduro.

    Price: From £2,899.99

    Discipline: Off road

    Usage: Downhill and Enduro

    • + Up to 170mm of travel
    • + 650b, 29er and Plus Size wheel options
    • + 1x Drivetrain

    Frame and Forks

The Enduro frame range has been re-designed from the group up for 2017, all with speed, handling and strength in mind. All models feature Specialized’s ‘All Mountain Geometry’, from the M5 Aluminium Enduro Comp to the no-expense-spared FACT 11m Carbon of the S-Works Enduro 29/6 Fattie. At both ends of the spectrum. front angles are slacker, chainstays are shorter and bottom brackets are lower. Overall, this makes for ‘flickable’, agile riding that is sure to put a muddy smile on your face.

All forks of the Enduro range have either 160mm or 170mm of travel. The S-Works Enduro 29/6 Fattie features an Öhlins RXF 36 with 160mm of travel (but this doesn’t include the plush ride of a potential 27.5 plus size wheel). In contrast, the 650b only models such as the Pro Carbon and Comp take full advantage of 170mm travel forks. Rear shocks range from the RockShox Monarch Plus of the Enduro Comp to the Custom Öhlins STX on the S-Works.

    Groupset

Across the range, Specialized have designed the Enduro using 11-speed SRAM 1x Drivetrains, apart from the revolutionary 12-speed SRAM Eagle groupset that features on the S-Works models (which include a huge 11-50t cassette). The advantages offered by 1x are a wide range of gears, alongside the added chain security of a 1x set up – perfect for all-terrain Enduro riding.

The Anthem 1 and 2 both use Shimano 11-speed drivetrains, with an ultra-reliable Deore XT setup on the Anthem 1 and Shimano SLX on the Anthem 2. The Anthem Advanced 2 uses SRAM’s X1 11-speed gears, whilst the Advanced 1 is built up with Shimano Deore XT. Things get interesting on the top-level Advanced 0, which includes SRAM’s revolutionary 12-speed Eagle groupset, with a massive 10-50 tooth cassette. There won’t be many climbs left undefeated by that range of ratios.

    Wheels

Having such a variety of wheel and tyre choice in mountain biking can make choosing the right MTB for you a difficult choice. However, the Enduro range excels in its adaptability and offers models than can take a standard 29er wheel, a standard 650b and a plus size 650b – offering the potential advantages of all three. All models are built using Specialized’s Roval Traverse wheels with durable, tubeless-ready rims and tough thru-axle hubs.

    Finishing Kit

Every model in the Enduro range includes a dropper seatpost as standard and is finished off using a variety of in-house Body Geometry contact points like the BG Henge Comp saddle and Specialized sip-grip bar grips.
