Specialized Stumpjumper Range Guide - Which Model To Buy in 2020?

   Words by Tom Worsfold

Specialized Stumpjumper 2020 - Range Guide

Since its inception at the humble beginnings of mountain biking, the Stumpjumper name is one synonymous with mountain biking and the good-times it brings with it. As the first mass-production mountain bike the Stumpjumper made waves, with its initial shipment selling out in just 6 days. Fast forward 39 years and the Stumpjumper is a fine-tuned, all-mountain machine, capable of everything from local laps to EWS steeps. The ultimate trail bike.

Overview - What sets it apart?

Discipline: MTB

Usage: All-mountain

Models: 3 frame variations, 2 wheel sizes, 14 models

  • - Zero proprietary components
  • - Sidearm frame design increases stiffness
  • - Top components
  • - Highly versatile for its intended use
  • - Two decades of FSR technology yields top suspension performance

New For 2020

This year sees the Stumpjumper using the new sidearm, an asymmetric frame design first introduced in 2019 that lightens, stiffens and improves efficiency over the previous design. Much like 2019, the three frame variations of Stumpjumper, Stumpjumper ST and Stumpjumper Evo are available, each designed with a different style of riding in mind. The majority of riders will be suited to the standard Stumpjumper, available in both 27.5” and 29” flavours in a variety of specifications.

One noteworthy change for 2020 is that the Stumpjumper ST comes in as an entry level aluminium bike only, as oppose to the varied-spec variants of 2019. Alongside this comes a revised Stumpjumper Expert, which comes equipped with a similar burly spec to that of the Stumpjumper Evo. Speaking of which, the Evo now comes in a Pro variant equipped with carbon frame, wheels and a ground-hugging Fox DHX2 Performance Elite coil shock.

The Framesets

The Stumpjumper truly is dream-bike material. Want adjustability? A flip chip allows for 0.5 degrees of head angle adjustment and non-proprietary componentry means you can customise your new ride to suit your ride style. The carbon framesets all feature the same high-end 11m carbon chassis as the S-Works version, as well as SWAT™ Door integration.

UK winter riders rejoice – Specialized have made the move away from press-fit bottom brackets to a more practical and traditional threaded setup to improve longevity.

Depending on wheel size the Stumpjumper frames have differing amounts of travel. The 27.5” models come equipped with 150mm of rear travel, whereas the 29” frames come with 140mm. Overall feel between the frames stays similar despite this difference in travel, with the larger 29” wheel size carrying more speed through rough sections. The only exception to this is the Stumpjumper ST, as explained below.

27.5” vs 29” – The Wheel Size Debate

What's best for you?

Every Stumpjumper model is available in both 27.5” and 29” wheel sizes, but which is the best for you? It depends on your riding style, with the two sizes being equally great in their own way.

27.5" (650b)

27.5” wheels feel nimble on the trail, allowing for shorter chainstay lengths which give the bike a livelier feel and make it easier to lift the front wheel over obstacles and for manuals. Those who spend a majority of their time in the bike park will appreciate their manoeuvrability on jumps and berms. Favour fun over Strava KOM’s? 27.5” is for you!

Outright speed is the name of the game with 29” wheels. The larger the wheel, the higher the overall top speed. The increased wheel diameter allows for improved tracking over rough terrain with the wheel hanging up less through rocks and holes. When first moving to 29” wheels there can be a slight learning curve with the bike needing to be weighted differently through turns, but the benefits are there for the taking when it comes to straight-line speed.

The Models - A Breakdown

The go to trail bike, and for many the best – capable geometry, lightweight and versatile. The regular version of the Stumpjumper is made for everyone, but is by no means a boring ride. Throw the numbers in a spreadsheet and you will be met with fun, user friendly geometry that is aggro enough to keep you upright when the trail gets steep but won’t spoil an all-day climbing epic.

RX Tune suspension is perfectly paired with the bike’s kinematics, ensuring you have the ability to fine tune and get the most out your ride. Nothing is an afterthought when it comes to the Stumpjumper’s suspension, with a zero-compromise approach leading to supple suspension that also takes the hits.

Stumpjumper ST

2020 sees the ST range slimmed down to just an entry level alloy model that is big on performance but light on the wallet. The ST moniker stands for “short travel”, with this model packing a spritely 130mm front and 130/120mm rear suspension travel. This makes it less of a handful on mellower trails, making it ideal for the UK’s trail centre network and for areas with less gradient.

Bang for buck is the name of the game with the ST alloy, featuring SRAM’s value orientated SX Eagle 12spd drivetrain and a selection of Specialized’s fantastic in-house componentry. For 2020 this model has had a spec update which includes a dropper post – a must have feature that adds flow to your rides. No more adjusting your saddle height before a climb, even at this price point!

Snappy and nimble, efficient and capable; the Stumpjumper ST Alloy brings the uncompromising performance of the Stumpjumper to an affordable price point.

Stumpjumper EVO

Released in 2019 to universal acclaim, the Stumpjumper EVO is Specialized’s answer to the “one bike to do it all” conundrum, if you like to get rowdy that is! The EVO pushes the envelope when it comes to trail bike geometry, with an incredibly slack 63.5 degree head angle and long reach measurements to match.

This is a bike that truly excels when the riding is steep and technical – the harsh gradients of Pleney’s off-piste, or the chunkiest of welsh descents. This is a bike designed to keep you in control when the trail turns nasty. 2020 sees the launch of a carbon frameset and full Pro build, meaning you can now get the EVO with all the top technology Specialized are known for.

The S2’s shorter (but still long!) toptube makes it the livelier of the two sizing options, a great choice for shorter riders or those looking for a more playful bike. The S3 is long, making it a handful at slower speeds, but get it up to pace and you will be rewarded with ultimate stability in even the toughest terrain. To summarise: S2 is long, S3 is longer.

Specialized Stumpjumper EVO Pro 2020

If you're looking for a traditional trail bike, you've come to the wrong place. Pack your stuff, say your goodbyes, and get out. But if you're on the hunt for the perfect shred sled...

  • Frame - FACT 11m full carbon frame
  • Fork - FOX FLOAT 36 Performance Elite
  • Drivetrain - SRAM GX Eagle
  • Brakes - SRAM Code RSC
