Electric bike use has exploded in the past few years in most areas of cycling, from trail to touring, but no brand has quite nailed the magic mixture needed to set alight the electric road bike market – with the launch of the Specialized Turbo Creo SL, that could be about to change.

Promising to flatten your climbs and make you laugh at headwinds, Specialized have combined their Turbo expertise with their relentless pursuit of innovation to deliver this new performance road platform. Bringing together industry-leading low weight, long range, and the smooth handling and ride feel you’ll know from their mechanical bikes, with the Creo SL you can ride further and faster than you have before - on both tarmac and gravel.

    Completely new lightweight motor

At the heart of the Turbo Creo SL is a completely new motor developed by Specialized themselves to deliver exactly the experience that they wanted for an electric road bike. Named the Specialized SL 1.1, the new motor draws on ten years of research, development and ride testing to reach a perfect combination of power, weight, size, range and ride quality and deliver a consistent power in the natural cadence that riders need. This isn’t a motor that necessarily rewards big gear mashing in full power mode, but is instead designed to accentuate and improve an authentic ride feel by applying assistance just where you need it. If you want a ride just like a mechanical bike but with the ability to ride further and faster than you could before, the Creo SL might just be the bike for you.

The new motor delivers 240 watts of assistance for easy climbing and cruising, but does so in a unit that is more compact than ever. Switching to a magnesium construction without a belt, Specialized have managed to slim the motor unit down to a svelte 1.95kg and when combined with a highly efficient 48v fully integrated downtube battery, the entire system weighs in at just 3.7kg. The internal battery that completes the Turbo SL E-Bike system offers 320Wh which Specialized claim should give you an approximately 80-mile range. Want to travel further without range anxiety? Specialized have also unveiled a Range Extender with the Creo SL. Coming as standard with the S-Works model and available aftermarket too, the extender slots into the bottle cage and plugs into the usual charging port to add an extra 160Wh capacity and give you even more juice if you need it, and with the Mission Control app you can customise exactly how and when you use that extra power.

This system’s crash diet lays the ground work for even lighter, better handling Turbo bikes with a natural bike feel and without compromising the quiet ride, premium battery delivery and superior connectivity that Specialized’s Turbo bikes and renowned for. Built into a FACT 11r carbon frame, the S-Works Turbo Creo SL weighs in at just 12.2kg – an absolute featherweight for an electric bike, and essential for creating that authentic ride feel both with and without assistance. Open Road geometry borrowed from the Diverge combined with a low centre of gravity created by the bottom bracket motor placement makes for playful handling and predictable steering. Throw into the mix the Future Shock 2.0 suspension system from the Roubaix with its adjustable damper for extra control, confidence and comfort and the result is a bike which offers all-day comfort, inherently flickable handling and ability without compromises – plus a bucket-load of assistance when you need it.

Authentic ride experience - on any surface

You don’t need to compromise on your road surface either – not only does the Creo SL come in road-going guise but it brings with it a ready-to-ride gravel sibling ready for even more adventure and exploration, the EVO. Boasting 38mm Pathfinder tyres, a flared Hover bar and a dropper post, the EVO’s versatile build combined with the Turbo system’s assistance opens up a ton of options for long gravel rides, bikepacking and getting lost in the great outdoors. If you do prefer to stick to tarmac, you’ll be rolling on 28mm tyres and standard bars.

Launching with an S-Works, Expert and Expert EVO spec, all the Creo SL models get a FACT11r carbon frame and FACT full carbon fork, plus identical Turbo SL e-bike technology including the new motor, internal battery and top tube mounted Turbo Control Unit. The TCU makes the new bike compatible with the Mission Control app, Turbo Control Display and ANT+ options giving you complete control over your Turbo ride experience. The Creo SL has clearance for up to 700x42mm tyres but will also swallow a 650b wheel with 47mm tyres, and all models use Boost spacing for the wheels to bolster strength without sacrificing weight or stiffness. Up front, the new SL 1.1 motor uses a single chainring with a 46t as standard while shifting duties vary with your model choice. All braking is hydraulic disc and the Open Road geometry and Future Shock 2.0 system are present across the range.
