Specialized Turbo Levo 2017 Range Review

       Words by Aaron Scott

       on 14/06/2017 13:29:38

E-Bikes – and MTB versions in particular – have exploded in popularity over the last few years. Both beginner and experienced riders are realising the potential offered by the E-Bike platform. They’re not just an easy way of getting into mountain biking, but they also offer regular riders the potential to hit tough, technical climbs over and over again, all day long. The Specialized Turbo Levo range is an industry leading E-Bike platform and builds on the brands vast experience in the mountain bike category.

Although the extra 530W of pedal assist offered by the Turbo Levo range allows riders from a wider range of abilities to enjoy some of the most difficult climbs around, it also means more experienced mountain bikers can enjoy some of their favourite trails for hours on end. With the extra traction offered from the plus size tyres and a variety of suspension options, the Turbo Levo range provides an incredible breadth of riding styles.

    Frame and Forks

The entire Turbo Levo range uses Specialized’s M5 Premium Aluminium frame design and innovative trail geometry. Although the extra weight of the motor means these bikes aren’t the lightest around, it is placed low down in the frame to ensure a stable centre of gravity. In addition, the extra weight does provide extra traction when combined with the low pressures used on the plus size tyres (which can be prone to ‘float’ a little too much on lighter bikes).

Both Full Suspension and Hardtail models offer up to 140mm of travel in both the forks and rear shocks, which when put together with the dampening of low tyre pressures gives plenty of shock absorption. Rear suspension throughout the range is made to be slightly stiffer in consideration of the extra weight of the frame.

S-Works and Expert models of the Turbo Levo – in the FSR platform – use a top-level RockShox Pike fork, whilst the Comp version uses the RockShox Yari. The entire FSR range boasts a Fox Float DPS rear shock. Hardtail versions in the range use a 120mm travel Rockshox Reba RL fork.

Across the range, Specialized have built the Turbo Levo using 1x 11-speed drivetrains from SRAM (other than the 10-speed groupsets found on hardtail models). Cassette ratios are wide, offering plenty of climbing capability, and work in tandem with the custom electric motor to provide the extra kick of power you might need. Those looking to fine-tune their ride can use the ‘Mission Control’ app to set motor parameters to their needs.

Plus sized tyres have become the latest variation on MTB wheels to revolutionise the industry. Put together with the extra weight and capabilities of the E-Bike platform, they really come into their own. Throughout the Turbo Levo range, Specialized refer to these bikes as ‘6Fatties’; 650b wheels with high-volume, fat tyres. This translates to extra grip, greater traction and more float to roll over the rocks and roots found on MTB trails. All models use handbuilt alloy wheels, other than the S-Works model, which include carbon fibre variations from Roval.
