    #TeamRutland: Our Ambassadors

       Words by David Hicks

       on 11/05/2018 11:52:56

Here at Rutland Cycling we recently embarked on a journey to find inspiring cyclists to join #TeamRutland - our ambassador programme where both us and our customers get to talk about all of the great experiences that cycling offers by sharing inspiring stories and product reviews from staff, customers and brands. We were looking for cyclists of all disciplines and abilities to get involved and share their experiences, and we received an overwhelming number of applications and have spent hours poring over some of the incredible stories we received.

After much consideration we're very excited to announce our hand-picked #TeamRutland ambassaors! Please join us in welcoming them to the team and keep an eye out for their stories over the next year, and please do continue to share your own stories with the #TeamRutland hashtag!

Riding a bike started out for me with racing my brother round the patio, to now evolving to regular trips to Wales for all day epics. Mountain biking has been with me for pretty much all my life and so has Rutland Cycling from an early age, fuelling my growing addiction for more bikes and gear.

As the saying goes, all things that go up, must come down, with the down being important. From Downhill to Trail, it’s all about those descents. Keep your fingers off the brakes, pop those jumps and rail those berms. Let’s not kid about, climbing is a means to an end. So be it the sandy berms of Chicksands to the rocky outcrops of Anton Stiniog, it’s time to point the bike downhill and let that adrenaline flow! So, with fatherhood on the horizon I’ve got just enough time to see the sights, ride the bikes and get as much done as possible. Luckily Rutland Cycling are here to assist again in my final push. It’s time to clip in.

At 51 years old, I have had a life-long passion towards cycling, but since the early 1990’s my focus has predominantly been within the mountain bike scene, and for the last five years, actively owning and using eMTB’s, encouraging and supporting others for both with his enthusiasm and passion along the way.

I ride almost every other evening throughout the year, plus at least once over the weekend period, and have an annual off-road mileage of approximately 3,500 miles. My main passion in respect of eMTB’s is for climbing and elevation gain, with the Swiss Alps being the main playground of choice. I’ve completed many truly epic climbs and have many more planned. Beyond riding bikes, I’m just as passionate about the maintenance and detailing of them - a natural extension from my days of both Supersport and Grand Prix bike racing, where attention to detail was everything.

I am an amateur triathlete and Team GB Age Grouper in Long Distance Triathlon. I first embarked on my triathlon journey back in July 2016 where I completed my first and only triathlon at the time, Ironman UK. Having totally fallen in love with the sport, I have not looked back since, completing a further two Long Distance triathlons and a number of Olympic Distance triathlons.

During this time I have represented my country at the European Long Distance Championships, taken part in a few crazy cycle rides, the most famous being the ‘Cambridge Pork Pie Ride’ to Melton Mowbray and back, and also a number of marathons, most recently the iconic London Marathon, all whilst trying to share my passion and inspire as many people as possible along the way.

My goal for this year is quite simple. Strive for progression every single day and enjoy the process! I have recently PB’d at the London Marathon in a time of 2:42:20 and my next race is the Grafman Middle Distance Triathlon on 20th May, followed by Challenge Samorin-Slovakia 70.3 on the 3rd June and then the ITU Fyn World Long Distance Championships in Denmark on the 14th July. I will then need to sit down with my coach and discuss what races I will do in the second half of the year, but for now, I am excited, motivated and looking forward to pushing myself to the limits.

I got into riding two years ago when I was having a bit of a health kick. At the time I thought it would be a bit of a temporary phase and I may not enjoy it but I was very wrong and now here we are. I live in the Lake District so getting out and about in beautiful surroundings on fun trails was never going to be difficult.

I mainly ride enduro but do enjoy booking on uplifts and having a day of downhill. I’d love to find a spare weekend to head up to Fort Bill and ride the World Cup track and the Nevis range. Grizedale is my local ride so I’m not short of off piste trails and bridleways to enjoy in the forest and surrounding areas. This year I intend on using the lighter nights to get some more “hike a bikes” done on some of the bigger mountains. Scafell, Snowdon, Helvellyn and so on.

There is something special about the mountain bike community - you can ride somewhere and bump into someone along the way and within ten minutes you’d class them as a friend. I came into the MTB scene with very little knowledge of the sport and no friends with the same hobby, but very quickly met loads of lovely like minded people with the same passion. It’s no surprise I’m totally hooked!

I have been cycling for around three years now, I started as I wanted to build some fitness for a charity challenge I was taking part in.

It all started on an old bike found in my parents garage that had seen better days, but short 10 and 12 mile routes gradually became longer and in six months I had ridden my first century, I remember feeling so proud! Things have moved on since and I now train for racing and time trialling. I was pleased to gain my 2nd category road race license last year and gain time trialling personal bests at 10 and 25 mile distances. I also rode my first 50 mile time trial. This year I plan on riding the Tour of Cambridge for the second time as well as taking part in the Ride London 100 mile event. I loved the Tour of Cambridgeshire and so am looking forward to giving it another good go!

I’m passionate about women’s cycling and encouraging more women to have a go at racing and competitive events. We have a great team of women competing in my club Leicester Forest Cycling Club in a number of disciplines which is great to see and be part of, and I love sharing stories of your everyday riders and their achievements on my blog. Most importantly I just love riding my bike, seeing the countryside, trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, being the best I can be and enjoying it along the way.

Starting out as a competitive track runner in my teenage years I first took to the bike competitively when I tackled the first world long course triathlon championships in Nice in 1982, finishing 11th. After a deteriorating ankle injury in my early 20s – and an interest in cycling piqued by the 1982 World Championships at Goodwood – I turned to 3rd cat road racing at Eastway and in the Surrey and Kent Leagues. Following children and a career move to Paris, I started to get involved with the burgeoning sportive scene in France when my fitness wasn’t quite there to finish races.

Heading back to the UK in my 40s, I got my Saturday mornings back and started training to race again - I started setting big targets which is what I have been doing ever since. In my late 40s I got my 2nd cat road race license and in my early 50s my 1st cat licence. In 2014 I won the British Masters Road Race title, the LVRC time trial title and was 4th in the World Championships road race in Llubljana. In 2015 I was also the overall win at the Masters Tour of Majorca after finishing 2nd to former Banesto domestique Robert Massot, who happened to be under a UCI doping ban at the time!

My pursuit of Masters road glory led to me setting up the Tour of Cambridgeshire in 2015 as a pathway for British age group riders to compete in the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. Seeing more and more people out on local roads and enjoying their riding gives me great pleasure these days and seeing so many people from the UK heading out to the Gran Fondo World Championships, where Britain has the biggest representation, is a huge source of professional pride.

After recovering from Crohn’s surgery in 2014 I knew I’d been taking my health for granted and needed to find a way to fit exercise into my busy life. I decided to start cycling the 8 mile commute to work in London, in November.

Starting off I was a nervous rider but as the winter went on I gained confidence, and when spring arrived I discovered the joy of riding in the warm sun and decided to sign up for a London to Oxford ride. It was while training for this ride that I found my love of long-distance cycling and bought a second bike, a road bike. A Canadian, shortly after the purchase of my second bike, seven months into cycling as an adult, I innocently googled “How long does it take to cycle across Canada” and discovered the world of bike touring. After a decade in London, I was captivated by the idea of spending the summer on a bike exploring my home country and started planning. A year later with my partner and a new touring bike, I started off on my first bike tour, cycling from Vancouver to Halifax a 4100 mile journey lasting 74 days.

Since my ride across Canada, I have discovered a love of climbing on my bike and have cycled some of the cols of the Tour de France in the Pyrenees as well as going on various bike tours here in the UK. For 2018 I’m challenging myself by participating in the Vatternrundan ride, a 300km ride around a lake in Sweden with 27,000 other cyclists.
