#TeamRutland: Our cycling goals for 2018

       Words by David Hicks

       on 29/12/2017 16:38:29

With 2017 coming to close and 2018 looming on the horizon, we caught up with some of our staff and #TeamRutland ambassadors to find out their goals for the coming year.

What goals have you set yourself for the coming year? Join the conversation and let us know on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

In 2017, my main achievements were riding the Fred Whitton with my #TeamRutland colleagues in May, and the Lon Las Cymru through Wales with my good friend Sarah in October. This year, David and I are planning to ride the Etape du Dales, a 110-mile Fred Whitton-esque challenge through Yorkshire, and the 150-mile C2C from Seascale to Whitby…if the wind is blowing in the right direction! I’ll also be joining fellow #TeamRutlander Neil for a leg of his charity ride in March, and the lovely group of women I ride with have a mountain biking trip to Glentress planned for March, when we’ll also plan our annual cycling tour in October. More Scotland, perhaps?

This year I came 13th in the world in my age group at the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, and achieved my goal of a 27 minute 10 mile time trial. For 2018, I'm aiming to get on the podium at the Tour of Cambridgeshire Chrono, get a top 10 at the Worlds, go under 25 minutes for a ten mile time trial, and learn to master rollers - without a wall to lean on!

This year I completed my cycle from Leicester to London along the canal - what I thought would take a day took me four days! Early this year I got hold of a Carbon Specialized Diverge which I call the canal Buster - the bike is so comfortable over the hidden bumps holes and handles so well over tree routes, gravel and rides wonderfully over the unpredictable tow paths…I’m yet to fall in. In 2018 I will be looking to carry on completing the canal network by bike.

This year has been all about getting back to fitness and juggling work and baby, as well as training. I focused my training and riding toward the cyclocross season this winter and I won the Single Track 7 women pairs MTB race in the summer which gave me the confidence to give a full season of cyclocross racing a go despite being short on time and energy. I have had a decent cyclocross season so far with lots of podiums but no wins as of yet! Next year my goal is to continue finding that balance between work, life and play. I want to keep improving my skills and fitness on the bike, especially my mountain bike. I have a training camp in Girona booked for April so after my race season is over I will have a rest and start building for the summer. Maybe I will try some more MTB races, maybe some road races.

In March I'll be riding around all 12 of our stores, starting at Nottingham and including a stop at the site of our new Leicester store due to be opened in 2018! I will be doing the ride on my Brompton over 4 days, carrying all my stuff in a trailer, to raise money for the Sue Ryder charity.

I’ve always been a trail center rider but for 2018 I’ve decided to take my riding a bit more seriously by competing in various Enduro events leading up to Ard’ Rock Enduro, with lots of training and ‘warm up’ events planned im hoping to start getting some quicker times for next year’s events.

E-Bike Team, Rutland Cycling Head Office
Life rather got in the way of my riding in 2017, so I've got two pretty simple goals for 2018 - regain some fitness and ride further than this year! Within that, I'd like to get a few more centuries in, do a multi-day ride, and have a crack at cyclocross.

Having achieved my primary goal of gaining my 2nd category license earlier this year. I decided to set myself a new challenge and have a go at triathlon, competing at the Hever Castle Triathlon in October. Things escalated quite quickly and a few days later I found myself entering into the Staffordshire Iron Man 70.3. My goals for 2018 are to retain my 2nd cat license, finish the Iron Man 70.3 and to ride a sub 22 minute 10.

In 2018, I've got two cycling expeditions for my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award - one in the Peak District and one in the Yorkshire Dales.

In 2017 I joined the Witham Wheelers and in the space of a year I have made some new friends and been to places I have never been before! I have learned to ride at speed in a group which has been scary at times, I have ridden my first century and I have also had a go at cyclocross, even winning a few races in my age category. Plus, I achieved my goal of riding over 5,000 miles. My goals for next year are to improve on my cyclocross skills including speed, confidence and technique. In the 10 mile TT I would like to hit at least 27 minutes which I think will be challenging but with a lot of hard work and training I am sure I can achieve it. Most of all I just want to ride my bikes with a smile on my face and carry on enjoying it!
    Julie Clark
    Giant & #TeamRutland Ambassador
In 2017 I took part in Ride the Night around central London and rode in Vietnam to Cambodia, both of witch were great events raising money for a fantastic cause. For 2018 my challenge list includes my first triathlon at the age of 52! Training is going well and I start the season with Stathern Duathlon, in March. Followed by Ride the Night - my 5th year in a row for this charity - I will be organising a sponsored 'Turbo in a Tutu' session Holkham Outlaw Half Ironman will be my first triathlon event in July but my biggest challenge of 2018 will be coast to coast Rat Race, 108 miles from one side of Scotland to the other running, cycling and canoeing, hoping to complete in 12/13 hours, together with a friend forming an all women team of 2!
    Wendi Carrington
    Giant Store Rutland
    My targets for 2018 are:

    1. 100 mile MTD ride that uses minimal road or gravel type tracks on a proper MTB (no 40c's allowed)

    2. 200 mile ride

    3. 500 mile week

    4. Enter a cyclcoross race and aim to not finish last

    5. Equal this year's total distance of 6,000 miles but with a greater bias towards MTB

    6. Finish the Fred Whitton in under 8 hours
