Testing…Moda Bolero 2013 Product Review | Rutland Cycling

   Words by Aaron Scott

Friend of Rutland Cycling and regular guest blogger Frank Burns has been riding and enjoying his Moda Bolero for a while now. Frank took the opportunity to review the all-round road bike for the Rutland Cycling Blog. Read his review here.

2013 Moda Bolero
The 2013 Moda Bolero Road Bike. Just £999.99 on the road.

Moda Bolero Road Bike 2013 product review

Like many in the world of club cycling, I had accumulated several bikes in the garage, all requiring their own set of spares because sizes and dimensions varied from bike to bike. So I decided, to ‘thin the stable’, reduce the number of bikes, and look for a road bike that would be designed for riding in all seasons. In other words, it would stand up proudly to the faster pace of a Sunday morning club run, would be ideal for sportive and audax events, and would have clearances for 25mm tyres and mudguards for winter riding (including, of course, typical UK wet summer riding!). With this in mind, I plumped for a 2013 Moda Bolero.

Is the Moda Bolero the right bike for me?

If you are looking for a race-specific or time trialling bike, this will not be your choice. The geometry of the frame is more suited to longer endurance events, like audax or sportive rides, where a slightly more upright posture makes many hours in the saddle much more comfortable. It would also make an excellent winter trainer and fast commuter, because it has clearances and eyelets for mudguards (in fact, it comes already fitted with mudguards). And if, like me, you like to do a bit of touring, carrying a bit of luggage (even a lightweight tent), the frame comes with mounts for a rear rack. I would suggest, however, that it is suitable only for lightweight touring (10-15 kilos of luggage).

It is everything you would expect of a lightweight alloy bike. It is nimble and responsive; its road holding is excellent; the American Classic Victory wheels are light and have a sharp feel to them.

In fact, for a shade under £1000 I don't think you could get a better bike.

Any downsides?

The Microshift groupset are not well-known branded products, but they are Shimano-compatible. The rear changer shifts smoothly, but the front changer frequently requires trimming or, sometimes, a double shift to get the chain to engage. This will not be a problem once you get used to it. And the 23mm Kenda tyres, that come fitted as standard, have a light racy feel to them, but they can be prone to punctures.

The Microshift Shifters are Shimano compatible.

♥♥♥♥ 4/5

For me, the Moda Bolero is a very good year-round road bike. It can be classified as a multi-use, multi-purpose bike for the dedicated roadie who wants space in his garage and has an aversion for maintaining several bikes on the go. Ride to work on it, load it up for some lightweight touring, strip it down for a sportive ride or kit it out for some serious winter training…it can rise to all these challenges, and more.
