Tour de France 2017: Pro Bikes of the Peloton

   Words by Aaron Scott

   on 05/07/2017 15:04:04

Hero

The Tour de France 2017 is in full swing and has already had its fair share of drama! Besides the riders, and the roads themselves, the real stars of the show are the bikes being ridden over 3,500 kilometres over the course of the Tour.

For the Tour de France, the best professional cyclists require only the very best equipment, and we’re very proud to offer many of the exact same pro-level bikes online, and across our eleven stores.

So, to celebrate, we went out to take a look at some of the bikes that the pros will be looking to ride to victory this year.

Specialized S-Works Tarmac

  • + Ridden by: Quick-Step Floors, BORA-Hansgrohe

The Specialized Tarmac is a legendary racing bike that has been ridden in - and won - major racing events all over the world, including multiple Grand Tour victories and two World Championships.

Specialized saves its 'S-Works' moniker for their very best bikes, and this Tarmac uses FACT 11r carbon fibre construction that's unbelievably light, stiff and reactive. In a world of specialist bikes, the Tarmac is a true all-round race bike

In this guise - the S-Works Tarmac eTap 2017 - the bike is dressed with SRAM's revolutionary wireless eTap groupset and top of the range Roval Rapide CLX 40 wheels.

Trek Madone

  • + Ridden by: Trek-Segafredo

The Madone is the aero-focused bike in Trek's stable, and definitely sits in superbike territory for the American brand.

Trek call it the "ultimate fusion of power, aerodynamics, ride quality and integration", and that certainly seems the case when you have it in your hands. With chunky truncated tube shapes, barely a cable on show, and brakes tucked into the fork and seat stays, the Madone looks fast standing still.

In addition to the integration, the latest Madone borrows the Isospeed decoupler from the Domane to add compliance and comfort - often found lacking on aero bikes.

  • Drivetrain - Shimano Dura-Ace 11-speed

Giant TCR

  • + Ridden by: Team Sunweb

The Giant TCR is designed to climb, corner and descend - similar to the Tarmac, the TCR is a complete race bike at home in many situations, and has already been ridden to victory by Tom Dumoulin in the 2017 Giro d'Italia.

The TCR has almost legendary status within road cycling, and the latest iteration from Giant is the lightest road frameset that they've produced, with the highest stifness-to-weight ratio of any road bike on the market

The Advanced SL 0 is the pinnacle of the range - with cutting edge SRAM eTap, integrated seat post and stunningly low weight.

Bianchi Oltre

  • + Ridden by: Team Lotto NL-Jumbo

Bianchi has been producing bicycles since 1885, but the Oltre might be their best yet. With agile, pin-sharp handling and vast stiffness, combined with its unique carbon layup, it can handle almost anything.

With an updated frame from its predecessor, the XR4 is more aerodynamic with direct mount brakes, integrated bars and integrated fork crown.

Despite buckets of stiffness, the Oltre keeps you comfortable with its Countervail technology, a viscoelastic carbon material used in the frame and forks which supposedly cancels up to 80% of road vibration.

Scott Foil

  • + Ridden by: Orica-Scott

Having been piloted to victory at paris-Roubaix in 2016, the Scott Foil combines speed with comfort and plenty of stiffness

An aero-focused bike, the Foil is no heavyweight, with a frame weight of just 945g. As is the trend, integration is key on the Foil with a fully integrated cockpit and rear brake caliper tucked under the bottom bracket.

This particular model comes with the updated Shimano Dura-Ace 9100 - close to the pinnacle of mechanical shifting.

Giant Propel

  • + Ridden by: Team Sunweb

Alongside the TCR sits Giant's aero offering - the Propel. Described as "your ultimate aero advantage", the Propel is at home in sprints, attacks and breakaways underneath the likes of Michael Matthews.

Engineered and developed with AeroSystem shaping technology, every shape and angle is optimised for minimal drag and proven by third party aerodynamic testing. Giant reckon this accounts for a saving of 12-36 seconds over 40km at a speed of 40kph.

Integration is again a big factor, with SpeedControl SL brakes tucked into the chainstays, internal cable routing and an integrated seatpost.

Cannondale SuperSix Evo

  • + Ridden by: Cannondale Drapac Professional Cycling Team

The Cannondale SuperSix has been around as the flagship bike of the US company for a few years now, but continues to improve with each iteration.

The latest version claims to have the ulimate balance of power, with an asymmetric BB30 bottom bracket, flared seattube and tuned carbon layup to deliver excellent power transfer. In addition to this stifness, Cannondale use their 'Speed Save Micro-suspension' system to absorb shocks and keep the wheels planted.

With disc brakes back on the agenda for the pro peloton in 2017, this Evo HM model comes specced with Shimano hydraulic disc brakes and Mavic disc specific wheels.

Specialized Venge ViAS

  • + Ridden by: Quick-Step Floors, BORA-Hansgrohe

With divisive looks, the Venge ViAS makes no concessions to anything other than speed - so much so, that Specialized claim it is the fastest bike in the world.

The Venge is the result of years of wind tunnel testing by Specialized to not justfind the fastest individual frame, forks, and bars, but to find the fastest combination of all these individual parts. The result of this work is a 116-second advantage over the Tarmac.

This bike has already made history, with Marcel Kittel becoming the first rider to win a Tour de France stage on disc brakes, on Stage 2 of the 2017 Tour.
