Two Stripy Jumpers: Specialized S Works Tarmac SL6 wins at the World Champs

       Words by Aaron Scott

       on 25/09/2017 10:44:21

    Tarmac-SL6-2018-5

How do you prove you’ve created a race-winning road bike? Well, by winning races. And that’s precisely what the new Specialized Tarmac SL6 has done – ridden to victory by Chantal Blaak in the women’s elite road race, and to an unprecedented third victory in three years in the men’s elite road race by Peter Sagan at the UCI World Championships in Bergen, Norway. Now in stock in our new Specialized Concept Store in Nottingham, we’ve taken a closer look at this world-beating bike.

The Specialized Tarmac holds near legendary status in the world of road cycling. Billed as their all-round race bike, the Tarmac aims to do everything well – and with victories in all three Grand Tours and two World Championships already under its belt before this weekend, it certainly seems to have achieved that goal. The newest iteration – the SL6 - has undergone a substantial redesign and taken a significant departure from the design brief of previous models with dramatic results. With the new Tarmac, Specialized have drawn on the needs of some of the top professionals in the sport and claim to have created the fastest, most complete race bike you’ve ever ridden.

    Completely redesigned

Let’s start with that different aesthetic. Previous versions of the Tarmac have been all flowing lines and smooth curves, while the SL6 stands in stark contrast with its straight, sharp lines. Unsurprisingly, this change has been borne out of a desire for high aerodynamic performance, and the family resemblance can be seen in the Shiv TT bike and Venge ViAS aero bike. The dropped seatstays helps to hide the tubes from the wind with little to no cost in stiffness due to the smaller rear triangle, and Specialized claim that the new Tarmac is 45 seconds faster over 40km compared to non-aero bikes in the same weight bracket. The influence of Specialized’s Win Tunnel can be seen in other areas too, with truncated airfoil shaped blades at the fork, direct mount brakes, a lowered crown height, and a D-shaped seatpost and seat tube.

As is now common across Specialized’s bikes, the SL6 gets the ‘Rider-First’ treatment, a frame design process which aims to develop each individual frame size around specific stiffness targets to offer a uniform riding experience for all riders regardless of their frame size. This year the process has been updated to compare the effect on all aspects of performance – handling, stiffness, aerodynamics, and weight – to achieve the most uniform ride. This has led to three new forks with unique steerer tube tapering to improve ride feel and precision, and to apply varying amounts of compliance depending on the frame size. Beyond the Rider-First Engineered frame, Specialized have also used their partnership with Retul to adjust the geometry of the Tarmac for male and female riders to ensure that they offer the same ride experience to both men and women.

    • Drivetrain - Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 9150 2x11 Speed
    • Wheels - Roval CLX 50

    Even lighter, just as stiff

However, Specialized haven’t stopped there with the new frame – the S-Works version has a claimed frame weight of just 733g for a 56cm frame, saving a huge 200g over the old Tarmac without losing any stiffness. Part of this weight saving is attributed to straighter, smaller diameter tubes, but the biggest saving has been from a new and far more complex carbon layup. This new process has increased the number of carbon pieces used to construct the frame from 350 to 500 which has helped reduce the overlaps between each carbon ply. A change to the bottom bracket shell which involved using a new light, removable sleeve rather than a built in carbon sleeve saved 30g alone, while the brake bridge has been removed in favour of a carbon booster plate, and the mech hanger has also been on a diet.
