What is a Gran Fondo? A look at the major events at this year's Tour Of Cambridge

       Words by Harry Archer

       on 13/03/2018 08:45:38

    What is the Toc?

    TOC 4

The ToC Sportive is completely unique in the UK because not only is it one of the flattest routes you’ll find in the UK but it’s also part of the UCI global series (Gran Fondo (GF) World Series). The Sportive route at the Tour of Cambridgeshire is 79.4 miles in distance and held on fully closed roads with a total climb of just 587 metres in total. The route takes in scenery around the Fens, which enables you to see for miles while enjoying a day in the saddle. Not sure if you’ll manage the full route distance, you’ve got the option of the Medio route which is 56 miles.

The Tour of Cambridgeshire is the UK’s qualifier for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. This series allows all riders, whether they just missed out on making it to a professional level, have been competing for years for their club, ex-pro’s and those who are less competitive who just love to get out on their bike the chance to qualify and ride for their country at the World Championships for amateurs. There’s no other event in the UK that has this qualifier status.

Qualifying for the World Championships >Sportive Start Structure at ToC >

Another difference is that the ToC Sportive is split into average speed start pens. This is a self-selecting option for all riders taking part, enabling riders with a similar ability to ride with one another. This allows those speedy individuals with lots of experience to be segregated from those who may not be quite so confident and ensure that each group of rider can reach personal goals. The Sportive maximum field is 10,000 and has sold out every year. The maximum participant number is significantly smaller than many other events to ensure the highest level of experience for each rider.

    TOC 1

The Tour of Cambridgeshire is a Festival starts on Friday 1st June 2018 and runs throughout the weekend to the evening of Sunday the 3rd. Dedicated to all types of cycling, whether it be road cycling, classic, gravel, folding or even family cycling, the aim is to bring everyone together and celebrate the shared love and passion for bicycles. They welcome every rider who’s taking part in the ToC Festival with open arms and ensure you have the best experience ever, whether you’re completely new to it or you’ve been taking part in events for years. Now in its fourth year, It's hoped that the experience gathered over the previous few years will lead to the 2018 ToC being the best yet!

What are the key differences between the Gran Fondo & Sportive races?

A Gran Fondo originated in Italy in 1970 and roughly translates into English as a ‘Big Ride’. Typical Italian Gran Fondos are at least 120km long and are individually chipped races from start to finish and also held on fully closed roads. The starts are done en masse with the format allowing riders of every level to participate - Very much like a marathon, where most participants are competing against the clock instead of each other. All riders, whatever the ability, are encouraged to take part and be involved in a Gran Fondo event for the togetherness, personal achievement and joy of smashing personal goals.

Take a scenic route and then add thousands of cyclists ranging from professionals, ex-professionals ,club riders and beginners. Throw in some medical support, Pit Stops filled with volunteers serving the snacks, energy products and drinks and completely traffic-free roads to ride on and you've got all the ingredients to create a perfect day out in the saddle!

The Tour of Cambridgeshire Gran Fondo is split into Race and Sportive; the Race gates are started first, with the Sportive gates following behind. Riders must hold a full race license to be part of the Race gate, which is split into Master’s age group pens. There is no requirement for a race license within the Gran Fondo Sportive. It’s split into average speed pens, which riders are able to self-select, allowing each cyclist to race or ride with others of similar ability.

    TOC 3

A sportive is a time trial where riders are generally on open roads with results posted in alphabetical order (there are no published / celebrated winners). There are also limitations on the size of waves allowed to start together. There are a few superb closed road sportive in the UK and the Tour of Cambridgeshire Sportive is highly regarded as one of the best. In a closed road sportive the results are published in order of time, fastest first and a sportive does not require riders to hold a racing license.

Information for the Gran Fondo Race start times, travel, locations and qualifications can be found by clicking here Whilst registration and further details of the Gran Fondo Sportive can be found here

Why are there two different results for the Gran Fondo? >

    Rutland Cycling at the Toc

Rutland Cycling have been Retail Partners of the Tour of Cambridgeshire since 2015, when Malcolm Smith and David Middlemiss conceived the idea of the Chrono Warm Up area while taking refreshments on board after a hard day in the saddle. Our own strong growth since then has been echoed by the growth of the Tour of Cambridgeshire over the same period, with the festival now attracting over 12,000 participants. Our team will again be on hand in the Chrono warm-up area, providing and managing all turbo trainers for riders competing in the individual and team time trial.

    TOC 2

We're particularly excited for ToC 2018 as the festival will welcome some brand new events including the Cambridgeshire Bike Show, and working alongside Golazo it’s safe to say, the event is going to be a huge success, with most of the country’s major cycling brands showcasing their products and services

We’ve always enjoyed working with Rutland Cycling but we’re even more excited with what we have in store for our Riders and ToC Visitors at this year’s Festival. With the support from the Rutland Team the Festival has grown to a completely new level, giving more and more people the opportunity to be involved.

    Jess Lockhart, ToC’s Festival Director

The ToC has become a fixture in Rutland Cycling’s calendar, just as it has with thousands of cyclists across the UK and beyond. We’re enormously proud to be associated with this unique event, and looking forward to delivering an even bigger festival in 2018. This June attendees will enjoy a huge bike show, with latest products from the world’s biggest brands on display, plus exclusive offers and experiences. It’s going to be a fantastic weekend

David Middlemiss, Managing Director of Rutland Cycling
